Even the birds crowded together around him,

a place to glean food, or a watering place for a circling bird.

Those that have not made the acacias their nest spend the night

    exhausted among the motionless thoroughbreds.

And those whose sustenance is under protection

soar like a piled-up rain cloud.

When they screen the midmorning sun, they form a canopy

over the heads of the black-turbaned horsemen.

When the sun finds a gap amid the feathers, she lets through

a slender ray, like sparks struck by hoof-tips.

She peered out from her dwelling, as though she were

stealing the army's secret before the battles.

They exchanged favors: the horsemen gave the birds flesh for food,

and the birds gave them shade in the heat of scorching winds.
