تَعانقنَاwe embraced one another لتوديعٍfor a farewell عِشاءًin the evening
تَعانقنَا لتوديعٍ عِشاءً
وقدand already شرِقَتchoked بأَدمُعِهاon their tears الحِدَاقُthe eyes
وقد شرِقَت بأَدمُعِها الحِدَاقُ
We embraced in farewell one evening,
We embraced for a farewell in the evening
while our eyes were choking on their tears;
As the tears in her eyes rose in the east
فماand did not زالcease العِناقُthe embrace يضيقُtighten حَتَّىuntil
فما زال العِناقُ يضيقُ حَتَّى
تَشكَّكناwe became unsure عناقٌan embrace أمor خِناقُa stranglehold
تَشكَّكنا عناقٌ أم خِناقُ
and the embrace kept tightening until
So the embrace kept getting tighter until
we wondered: was it an embrace or a stranglehold?
We doubted, was it an embrace or a noose?
