O scribe who has bewildered creation

with two scripts, in musk and ink:

فجَلا المسك في صحيفة عاج

فجَلا المسك في صحيفة عاج

وجلا النَّقش في صحيفة طِرسِ

وجلا النَّقش في صحيفة طِرسِ

you revealed musk on a sheet of ivory,

and revealed the inscription on a sheet of parchment.

ليت جِسمي النَّحيفَ من بَعضِ أقلا

ليت جِسمي النَّحيفَ من بَعضِ أقلا

مك أضحَى ولَيتَ نَقسَك نفسي

مك أضحَى ولَيتَ نَقسَك نفسي

Would that my slender body were one of your pens,

and would that your ink were my soul.

فَلَعَلِّي يوماً أَمَسُّ بناناً

فَلَعَلِّي يوماً أَمَسُّ بناناً

منك يا سيدي فَيَذهب مَسِّي

منك يا سيدي فَيَذهب مَسِّي

Then perhaps one day I might touch fingertips

of yours, my master, and my madness might depart.
