Love coursed through me as breath does.

Love flowed from me like breath

And I gave my eye the horse’s reins.

And I gave my eyes free rein like a horse

وليس سيد لم يزل نافراً

وليس سيد لم يزل نافراً

وربما جاد لي في الخلس

وربما جاد لي في الخلس

And no lord has remained aloof.

No master remains unopposed for long

And sometimes he was generous to me in stolen moments.

Though at times he is mild in private

فقتله طالباً راحة

فقتله طالباً راحة

فزاد ألياً بقلبي البيس

فزاد ألياً بقلبي البيس

So he killed him, seeking relief.

So I killed love seeking peace

So it increased [unclear] in my [unclear] heart.

But it only increased the pain in my anguished heart

وكان فؤادي كنبت هشيم

يبس رمى فيه رام قبس

And my heart was like brittle vegetation,

Dried out, into which a thrower cast a firebrand.

Withered when he lit a spark

ويا جوهر الصين سحقاً فقد

غنيت بيا قونه الاندلس

And O jewel of China, away with you! For indeed

Oh gem of China, crushed
