O friend, leave a gravely ill man who has persisted in his headlong course.
O friend, leave the obstinate fool with a noose around his neck,
And leave the forenoon crescent, if it appears on its horizon.
And leave the crescent moon be, even if it appears on the horizon,

حَمراءَ ضافيَةً دَلَّت على حُمُقِه
And look at al-Tamshish's beard, jutting out—
And look at the beard of the old fool, sticking out,
Red and luxuriant, it revealed his foolishness.
Red and dripping, indicating his stupidity,
كأنَّماas though سَرَقَstole from الفَرَّانُthe baker جارَتَهُhis female neighbor
كأنَّما سَرَقَ الفَرَّانُ جارَتَهُ

دِيكاً فَعَلَّقَهُ القَاضي إلى عُنقِه
As though the baker had stolen from his female neighbor
As if the baker stole his neighbor's rooster,
A rooster, and the judge had then hung it around his neck.
So the judge hanged it around his neck.
