مُعَتَّقَةًaged كلَوْنِlike the color of الجُلَّنارِpomegranate blossom
Many a night I spent being served choice wine,
aged, the color of pomegranate blossom.

As though its bubbles were beads of pearl
floating above gold in goblets of pure gold,

from the hand of a tunic-clad man, proud of a rump
too ample for his waistcloth's breadth to contain.
أقمتُI stayed لشربهاto drink it عَبَثاًin idle play وعنديand beside me
بناتُthe daughters of اللهوِrevelry تعبثُfrolic بالعُقارwith wine
I stayed to drink it for pleasure, while beside me
the daughters of revelry frolicked with wine.
ونجمُand the star of الليلnight يركضُraces فيthrough الدياجيthe deep darkness
كأنّas though الصُّبْحَdawn يطلبُهُpursues it بثارfor blood vengeance
And the star of night raced through the darkness,
as though dawn pursued it for vengeance.
