Halt, you two: for some purpose we traveled by night, and now travel no farther.

Otherwise, let us walk as the dusky sandgrouse walk.

Halt, you two; let us discern where this lightning lies in relation to them,

and whence the wind travels, spreading its fragrance.

Perhaps the soil of the valley where once I

visited them has breathed its fragrance for the travelers.

    Otherwise, this is a valley flowing with ambergris;

otherwise, neither the mounts nor we know.

Do you take every lair in the thicket

for the lair of dark-eyed gazelles and tawny fawns?

Have they learned that I am a captive in their land,

with no knowledge of it save wandering blindly?

It is strange that I inquire about them,

while they dwell amid the curves of my ribs and breast.

    فيبعُدُ عن عيني ويقرُبُ من فِكري

    I have a beloved whom misfortunes bar me from;

he grows distant from my eyes but nearer to my thoughts.

When my soul recalls him, it surges at his memory,

as when a cupbearer stumbles with a cup of wine.

He has left me only a lovesick man's last flicker of life,

who enfolded the breath of scorching ground among the embers.

The nights have never ceased to shoot their arrows at me,

and I shoot back at the nights with endurance and patience.

I bear my days upon a tender maiden's back,

yet they bear me upon a rugged mount of their own.

I swore not to give time the reins,

then overlook a wrong, with one like Yahya to turn to.

Yahya has helped me against every calamity

and girded me, from his own bounty, with Amr's twin Samsamah swords.

He granted me everything from glory to lavish gifts,

and bequeathed me estate upon estate.

Through him I lodged, secure, atop Ghumdan,

and he crowned me with a crown of might and pride.

I found no fault with him except that I described him

and once compared him to the rain.

That was only because our tongues have followed

the customary comparisons of verse and prose.

So do not ask me, you two, about my bygone days:

by Time, before Yahya I was surely in loss.

Enough for me is a joyous man whose qualities seem

like garlands of pearls upon a blade of gold:

    صقيلِ حواشي النفس والظرفِ والشعر

    delicate in the sheen of his face, his cheerfulness, his contentment;

polished in his soul's edges, his refinement, and his poetry.

O son of Ali, I did not praise you ignorantly:

neither pair nor single man has been deemed your equal.

O son of Ali, endure for what you are worthy of:

you are worthy to wear the crown, rather than the sons of al-Nadr.

    ولي منه ما بينَ الحَجون إلى الحِجر

    A young man with whom the hopeful find the Sacred House;

from him I have all between al-Hajun and al-Hijr.

When I set down my saddle before his courts,

I took time's pledge of safety from time's calamities.

His bounty almost could not compensate for what it brought

upon me of multiplied sin and guilt.

For I was denying his bounty

and his kindness toward me through my inability to give thanks.

If I cannot give thanks for his favor,

how shall I thank God at the place of Resurrection?

    وليسَ حنينُ الطيرِ إلاّ إلى الوكْرِ

    My yearning is for him, whether traveling or encamped;

birds yearn only for their nest.

No kings have feathered an arrow as he feathers one,

nor have kings shaped an arrow as he shapes one.

He has tethered the sleek, outracing steeds upon the hills

and cut short the coursers' breath with exhaustion.

O towering mountain of God's mercy,

to whom goodness flees in an age of wrong!

May even the full moon in the deep night's darkness be your ransom,

shining—and even the sun, beyond the moon.

You have stripped the Mashrafi sword of its qualities:

its quivering is a trembling born of fear.

If I were asked who, in all creation,

exists besides you, despite my knowledge of it, I would say: I do not know.

Are you not the one who meets the battalions alone,

even were they made of night's dark hours and of dawn,

even if they held Gog's barrier, built of sword-edges,

grooved, or of dusky Rudayni spears?

    Be a little gentle, O well-beloved king,

with yourself; keep a measured portion of yourself in reserve.

    فأشفقْ على العَليا وأشفِق على العمر

    You will attain all of that and this;

so have pity on high glory, and on your lifespan.

Through striving for high glory its edifice is raised,

yet in diversion too is rest for soul and thought.

A soul like yours has a right to preservation

for the day of Khatti spears and the unprecedented onslaught.

Had the proud kings not rested their souls,

they would have faltered beneath that burden laid upon them.

Life's lushness, and youth in its prime:

you have no excuse for forgoing pleasure and diversion.

There is no good in this world if it is not enjoyed

by a cherished king in the springtime of life.

Come, delight in days sweeter than wishes,

adorned with refinements subtler than magic.

    You have completed the glory you are building;

so trail life's robes through this flourishing time.

Let steeds rest that never cease their night journeys,

and slumber settle, never free of alarm.

One like you has resolve that calls for the fine, keen sword,

while every slender-waisted woman summons his desire.

    You have long slaked the sword with blood amid battle's terror;

it is your due to slake the earth with the blood of wine,

and delight in fair, gracious women like sculpted figures,

and sweep along through your world in green robes.

She who visited you warily, late in the night,

is most entitled among the oryx to haughtiness and pride.

Crowned Heraclius of the Romans wishes

he might gain the lofty rank that she has gained.

    وما شطْرُ شيءٍ بالغنيِّ من الشطر

    She was given you by one of whose heart you are half;

and no half of anything can do without the other half.

Your brother—no eye has seen his equal as a brother,

when he sits with gathered knees in the council of prohibition and command.

The gift, when it came, touched you

as cool water touches the burning thirst within the breast.

From an exalted king to a well-beloved king

she passed gracefully, from a lofty palace to a palace.

    وما هي إلاّ الشمسُ زُفَّت إلى البدر

    She is nothing but good fortune meeting its rising place;

she is nothing but the sun led as a bride to the full moon.

She will bear you chieftains from the house of Ya'rub,

men of white serving bowls and radiant faces.

I said to the one who gave her to you, a noble lady

of noble ancestry on both sides, deep-rooted in lineage:

You gave her to one who has no equal on earth

for an army when Arab steeds clash, or for a frontier.

    O Ja'far of high glory, O Ja'far of bounty,

    O Ja'far of battle, O Ja'far of victory!

What an excellent brother, on every day of battle,

with whom you charge—neither weakling nor inexperienced man!

    كصرف الردى كالليث كالغيث كالبحر

    Like the full moon of darkness, like the sun, like dawn, like morning light;

like death's onslaught, like the lion, like rain, like the sea!

By my life, through him you were strengthened on battle's day,

as your two hands are strengthened by their ten fingers.

For this Moses, His prophet, communed with God,

    and cried: Relieve that which constricts my breast;

    grant me my brother as a minister, that I may seek his help;

strengthen my back through him, and let him share my task.

How excellent an ordering of affairs and exalted ranks,

and a mainstay of kingship and the vast army!

To you he traces every glory and lordship,

and for his pride it is enough to be ascribed to you.

Behind you he faced every armored champion,

and from your nurturing lap he led time captive by force.

He rode as a horseman only in your battle-dust,

and grew to manhood only beneath your red banners.

    You found joy in him, and you yourself had fostered him;

you raised for him all that you raised of worthy renown.

No brother following you is like Yahya,

nor are there radiant chiefs like his sons.

You are not his brother but his father: you cared for him,

and sheltered him in hardship and ease.

Ali wishes he could see in him what you see,

to know the marvels of the blade and the cleaving sword.

Then he would rise to offer what he deserves

of praise to him, and shine forth from the dust.

Before Yahya and Ja'far, I did not know

that earth's kings could be gathered in one age.

I marvel at this age, which lavished Ja'far

and Yahya, though generosity is not among time's traits.

The days did not bring forth your like

of old; you were the barren one's lone egg.

    وما هو إلا الكفرُ أو سببُ الكفْر

    Praise of anyone but you is not truly praise;

it is only unbelief, or a cause of unbelief.

If people gave their souls freely,

no disposition would keep you from giving your very lives.

If ever I ask God for anything but your endurance,

may I never attain sincerity, in private or in public.

Shall I pray to my God for happiness while with you,

when you are the brilliant stars of fortune that journey by night?

Shall I seek from Him, asking for what you have supplied,

and ask Him for water while the Tigris flows for me?

By my life, your gifts have made me choke,

and you have loaded me with their backbreaking burden.

    وما خِلتُكُمْ ترضَوْنَ للجارِ بالأسْرِ

    I have been taken captive by the kindness you bestowed;

I never thought you would accept captivity for a neighbor.

Gently, my cousins, foremost men of my people,

kings of my folk, great lords of my own lineage!

Do not overwhelm me with more: enough for you,

and for me among you, is the abundance you see.

Has it pleased you that I rose without strength,

as it pleased you that I pleaded an excuse without one?

I earnestly ask you to excuse me from appearing

quick to accept favors but slow to give thanks.

For if I feel no shame at what you have done,

then I feel no shame at baseness and treachery.
