Are this rain's tears pearls, or drops?
Are these drops of rain pearls or dots?
How lovely it would be if it could be gathered!
How lovely they would be if they could be gathered

Between the clouds and the wind a battle rages:
Between the clouds and the wind there is a battle
Clashing sounds, and blades unsheathed in the sky.
Peals of thunder and rain pouring down from the sky

As though it were angry, yet swiftly appeased;
As if angry then quickly appeased
So neither its pleasure nor its anger lasts.
But its pleasure does not last, nor its discontent

Spring bestowed on us a fresh, untouched garden,
Spring has gifted us a delicate meadow
As a casket breathed forth its camphor.
As camphor's fragrance is emitted through perforations

Clouds linger in the reaches of the sky,
Clouds hovering around the edges of the sky
Curled, while a smooth downpour streams from them.
Curly rain cascading down from them

As though their pouring rain on every side
As if their twisting in every direction
Were a tide from the sea, rising and then falling.
Is a wave from the sea rising then descending

And lightning appears in its brow's radiant gleam,
Lightning appears in the sheen of its pride
A judge from the rainclouds, excessive in his judgments.
An unjust judge in his rulings going too far

And day and night, in their length and shortness,
Both thunder and lightning, long and short
Have two cords: one drawn in from us, one extended.
Are two ropes contracting and extending for us

And the earth spreads leaves upon the soil's cheek,
The earth lays out leaves on the bosom of the earth
As carpets are unfurled along its borders.
As carpets are spread out on its edges

And the wind sends forth perfumed breaths,
The wind sends out fragrant breaths
Like perfume mingling with rosewater.
Like the scent of roses mixed in rosewater

As though they were al-Mu'izz's breaths, wafting forth;
As if they are breaths of the musk deer
Their bounty admits neither doubt nor error.
No doubt or error in them

By God, if the rain-bearing stars resembled him,
By God, if the breezes were like it
No misery or despair would visit the world.
No one in the world would despair or lose hope

Time parted for us to reveal the light of his brow,
Time opened for us its prideful radiance
To reveal a reign with neither weakness nor flaw,
An era without weakness or downfall

Until a king from it held sway among mankind:
Until a king gained power over the people
Kings and rulers were adorned by his reign.
The kingdoms were adorned by his rule and authority

He marks out a station above the shining stars,
He has made the stars his humble dwelling
Which no other stations have approached or equaled.
No scheme ever aimed so high

An imam of justice who fulfilled in every respect
An imam of justice who fulfilled in every way
What they decreed and stipulated for a just imam.
As they decreed for the just imam and stipulated

He stands apart by excellence from those past and yet to come,
He surpassed the past and the novice
As a necklace's center surpasses its two ends.
Like a necklace's central bead outshines those on its edges

ولاnor يبِيتُspends the night بدُنْياwith worldly life وهوwhile he is مغتبطdelighted
No morning finds him rejoicing in the wealth he gathers,
Not boastful because of the wealth he amasses
Nor does he spend the night delighted with worldly life.
Nor covetous of worldly things while content

But he is the opposite of what the envious suppose him to be,
But the opposite of what the envious presumed of him
And beyond the utmost reach of extravagant or unrestrained praise.
And beyond what any pompous boaster imagined

The flood of earth's seas, were they gathered, would be shamed
He could provide the rain of sustenance to the lands combined
By the fingers of his palm, surging and raging.
With the surplus of his restrained coffers

A face linked to the essence of the Throne's water,
A face connected to the celestial fount
A bloodline bound to pure, unalloyed glory.
A lineage linked to the essence of absolute glory

A sun whose rising places are filled with truth,
A sun from the Truth, its horizons filled,
Toward which neither injustice nor excess finds its way.
No injustice or deviation finds its way there

From him comes terror to the lions in their lairs:
In its lairs it terrifies the lions
A sword of his, unsheathed in victory's right hand.
A sword forged by the right hand of victory

Umayya failed in what it sought from him,
Umayyah was thwarted in its aims against him
As a comb fails upon a bald man's head.
As the comb is frustrated by the bald man’s pate

And in anger, from the depths of earth, they sought
In their anger they tried to pluck stars
Stars whose farthest reaches lay far beyond them.
From the trajectories of those lofty lights

This, though the Criterion has already distinguished between you two,
The Criterion has separated you
Where favor and wrath stand apart.
As pleasure is separate from anger

In nobility, all other people are the heel,
People other than you are downtrodden
While you are where the crown and earring rest.
While you are where the crown and earrings reside

Nor do I complain on my own account in loving you,
Nor do I complain of your affection for me
For you are close-knit neighbors within my heart.
For you are dearer to my heart than its own pulsing

O best of Arabs and non-Arabs
And of Ahmad's family, whether young or gray-haired,
And the Family of Ahmad, whether they brandish swords or ink

May the conquest gladden you—not that I have heard of it,
May triumph befall you; not that I heard of it
Nor do I impose conditions on God concerning what He has willed.
Nor on what God wills do I place conditions

Rather, I augured well, though fate prevails,
But I am hopeful, for destiny is supreme
And God unfolds hopes, and they unfold.
And God expands hopes so they spread

Nor do I ask for anything but a favor, whose plea was borne
I ask only for something that has reached
To the Imam by vigorous, galloping couriers,
The Imam's request when the elite strove

From atop a black steed, whose utmost reach cannot be surpassed
Above the dusky steed none can surpass its limit
By a star shooting from the sun's horizon.
A star detached from the solar horizon

A rider urges it on, his paths grown narrow,
Mounted by a rider whose paths are straitened
Pallor plain upon him, gray hairs in his beard.
Wandering in the desolate darkness, his mantle torn

Indeed, when kings are all compared with you,
Verily when kings are compared to you together
You are a sea in abundance, and they are drops.
You are an ocean, and they are but drops
