    Those ʿĀmirite full moons

    have heads of sword-blades.

Moons amid darkness, with whom sway

    human boughs as they walk.

    Hearts lament their absence, yet

those moons have no skies but these hearts.

They would almost outwit the boughs, if

    their golden leaves were replaced.

    Every carnelian-cheeked one has

    jet-black tresses at her parting.

And the rump quivers, as though what

toyed with it among them were serpents.

O snares in which the heart's bird was caught,

    is there no escaping you?

How often, that day at Jizʿ al-Liwā, I was slain

by bright swords—and you were their sword-belts.

To my eyes, brighter than dawn,

    even were you pitch-black.

You bore a body I thought was liquid,

when necklaces made both its sides ripple.

Yemeni striped cloth fluttered upon it, as

    leafy thickets fluttered upon water.

As though its fingertips, encircled with rings,

were spearpoints for thrusting, dyed red.

Will you tell us—love is a cutting sword,

for which you owe us blood-debts—

for what offense were dyed with my blood

    those fingers, red as ʿanam?

How can you seek blood that

Yazanite spears have always failed to draw?

A young warrior within me hurls them into the fray,

    whose very mention deaths dread.

He charges into death just as

his innate virtues have advanced toward generosity.

If these generous impulses are not mine,

    whose are such generous impulses?

If I had any means in this age,

seekers of bounty would know what noble deeds are.

And if time has taken my sustenance, I have

    provisions from Ismāʿīl's bounty.
