وأَشْبَهَتِand she resembled الصبحَthe dawn فيin المَنْظَرِappearance
She walked, imitating the gait of an oryx calf,
She walked with the gait of a graceful gazelle
And resembled the dawn in appearance.
And resembled the dawn in her visage
وماسَتْand she swayed gracefully وقدand already جاذبتهاtussled with her الصَّبَاthe east wind
ذيولاًtrailing hems منof السندسfine silk الأَخضرgreen
And swayed, while the east wind tussled with her
The morning breeze blew her green silken dress
Over trailing hems of fine green silk.
As she gracefully swayed to and fro
فقلتُso I said قضيبُa branch of النَّقَاthe sand dune يانعٌflourishing

So I said, "A flourishing branch of the dune
I said, “Like a slender palm tree is this maiden
Sways on its curved, dust-colored ridge."
Gently swaying on her delicate stem”
لقدindeed فَضَلَتْshe surpassed كلَّevery ممشوقةٍtall, slender woman

She has indeed surpassed every tall, slender woman
She surpasses all ladies who proudly strut
Who vaunts herself above the radiant moon,
Lost in their own vanity and whim
كماjust as فضلَhe surpassed الناسَthe people فيin مجدهمْtheir glory

Just as all people were surpassed in their glory by
As Abu Ja’far ibn Abi Ja’far
Abu Ja'far, son of Abu Ja'far:
Surpasses all people in renown and fame
فَتىًa young man إنif دَجَاgrows dark حادثٌa calamity حالكٌpitch-dark
فمرآهthen the sight of him كالفَلَقِlike the dawn المُسْفِرِradiant
A youth—if a pitch-dark calamity casts its gloom,
A young man whose sharp intellect
Then the sight of him is like the radiant dawn.
Cuts through problems like a gleaming sword
