Pass her round, as rose petals shed the dew,

and generosity's neck gleams amid the necklace's pearls.

Bubbles upon tawny wine, as though they were

crumbs of camphor in rose-hued ambergris.

I imagined her stricken with a fit as she was mixed,

from the curling foam with which she filled her mouth.

The water's spearpoint seared her with a thrust, so she was armored

in closely linked bubbles, fearing another thrust.

Blood-hued and crimson, her glass was closed

around her—how often a veil is drawn over writing!

When the ewer strikes a goblet, she scatters

as sparks fly from the fire-stick when struck.

Hers is lightning's gleam; the cup before her

is a cloud, and the ewer has thunder's rumble.

And a sheath of glass, with my fingers for its baldric,

for a sword of wine, neither Yemeni nor Indian:

we unsheathe from it every keen, red-stained blade,

though no blood has been spilled from it in hatred.

When a jewel of its bubbles swirls within it,

and it is drawn as a base man's inborn nature is drawn out,

we transfer it into our bodies, as though

cramped in one sheath, it had been returned to another.

Its blaze tears night's collars away from us,

as one bereaved tears mourning clothes over a loss.

A gazelle, yet in approaching the cup among his companions,

when he serves it, he has a tawny lion's pounce.

The east wind's hand swayed with him beneath his mantle,

and he trembled; we fancied wine's intoxication came from the cold.

He revealed a cheek of blazing embers,

and stood, a figure fashioned of limpid water.

The musk of his cheek-down preserved his cheek's fragrance,

as a mantle reddens, torn open over a dark-skinned man's throat.

My heart's dark core was bewildered in the fire of loving him,

so what I concealed was like what I revealed.

He kept pouring for every brother of sincere affection,

wine purer and sweeter than his dusky lips and my love.

He does not withhold kindness from one deserving it,

like someone barring the bewildered from the paths of right guidance.

When ropes fail the hands, they cling

to a cord stretching toward the divine mystery.

I marvel that a page from you has not become scorching,

though it was dissolved from the blaze your thought kindled.

and at tongues that, if you speak, falter, as though

they had frozen from the cold within their verse.

How fine a friend a man has in one like me, who deems

a friend's pure affection worth more than gifts.

If I find no fortitude in a friend

to bear my burden, he would find such fortitude in me.
