يا من يريدُ على الإساءة وُدَّنَا

يا من يريدُ على الإساءة وُدَّنَا

طَرْفُ الوداد عن المسيء غَضِيضُ

طَرْفُ الوداد عن المسيء غَضِيضُ

O you who seek our affection despite wrongdoing,

O you who seek our affection when you do wrong,

Affection’s gaze is averted from the wrongdoer.

Affection turns away disgusted from the wrongdoer.

ليس الودادُ عن الإساءَةِ ظاهراً

ليس الودادُ عن الإساءَةِ ظاهراً

كالماءِ ليس عو الضِّرَام يفيض

كالماءِ ليس عو الضِّرَام يفيض

Affection does not arise from wrongdoing,

Affection is not evident towards wrongdoing,

Like water, which does not gush from blazing fire.

Like water does not overflow from the bitter well.

أنت الحبيبُ لنا بكونك محسناً

أنت الحبيبُ لنا بكونك محسناً

فإذا أسأْتَ لنا فأنت بغيض

فإذا أسأْتَ لنا فأنت بغيض

You are beloved to us because you do good;

You are dear to us when you are good,

So if you wrong us, then you are hateful.

But if you wrong us, then you become hateful.
