It passed by night, while sleeplessness beset my eyes,
Sleeplessness made my eyes restless
and the nape of darkness grew gray with dawn:

a raincloud, through whose reaches lightning waved
A rainstorm whose lightening shakes its sides
like Yemeni swords in the horizon's hands.
Like Yemeni swords in the hands of the horizon

كهُزْءِlike the mockery of معشوقٍa beloved بحبٍat a lover قدalready عَشقْfell in love
It wept, bringing laughter to the blossoms,
It wept, so for the lanterns it was a laughter
like a beloved's mockery of a love-struck lover.
Like the derision of a lover who fell in love
والزُّهْرُand the stars مثلlike الزَّهْرthe blossoms فيin أغصانهits branches
أوor كالغوانيlike fair maidens تحتbeneath أَبرادcloaks السَّرَقsilk

And the stars were like blossoms among its branches,
And the flowers are like flowers on their stems
or like fair maidens beneath silken cloaks.
Or like necklaces under blue garments
