ليُعْلم أنّ الجودَ منه على عِلْمِ
When sober, he repeats the gifts he gave while drunk,
He returns his gifts of generosity upon sobering
so it may be known that his generosity is deliberate,
So it becomes known that his generosity was done knowingly

تكرّم لما خامرتْهُ ابنةُ الكرْمِ
and, in his giving, he may be spared someone’s claim:
And he is saved from the saying of one who would say
“He was generous when the daughter of the vine intoxicated him.”
You were generous due to the daughter of generosity overpowering you

ولكنّه حضٌّ بريّ من الذمِّ
For wine’s intoxication has indeed spurred him to generosity,
For the intoxication of wine impelled him to generosity
but it is an urging free of blame.
But it was an innocent impelling, free from blame
