What solace is mine in the east wind,

And its night journey from my traces and ruined dwellings,

And from gazelles secure against a hunter,

Untouched by the hunt in the shade of noonday rest!

She unfolded before me secrets of love

That I had kept folded away from every friend.

And she signaled favor—many a sign of favor

Toward you appears in a messenger's testimony.

How I marvel that she found her way, bringing

The coolness of quenching to burning thirst!

She did not know my sleeping place; rather,

My night guided her there by my moaning.

I seek no healer for my sickness,

For my recovery from it lies in the moist breeze.

His gaze is disheveled, like a sword:

Its edge has coursed between keenness and slenderness.

She crossed a sea to reach him, yet avoided

The sea of streaming tears around him.

O east wind, whose burnisher has cleared

Rust from the surface of polished water,

Blow on me once more with that breath in which

An ailing man found healing through a gentle breeze.

Like winds that soothed me with hopes,

All but proving the impossible possible.

Was it an east wind that blew with youth's sweet basil,

Or a north wind that made me drunk with wine?

Where a garden's songbirds sang to me,

Enrapturing me with light and heavy rhythms,

    In brief meters too subtle

In their measure for al-Khalil to comprehend,

And melodies that left Maʿbad bewildered,

Though he knows the music of cooing.

And darkness gazes toward its dawn

With squinting eyes made of the sky's stars.

It feared drowning in the flood of day,

So it turned away from it with drenched skirts.

Gray hair sowed sorrow at my temples,

And much of it grew from a little.

So I took the fair ones among them for stars:

Fleeing whiteness, they hid from me in setting—

All who look from youth's graceful side

With the gaze of one admiring lovely form.

So I pass muster with her only through necessity,

Like a fatḥa licensed on the intervening rhyme-letter.

How can I fare with her when she grows angry?

The ordeal of her deadly wrath has tormented me.

A graceful maiden from whom Babylon takes

A portion of magic, from her kohl-dark eye.

And when it confronts her gaze,

She blunts its steel with a languid glance.
