Thought has fashioned your image before my eyelids;
Your imagination is to my eyelids as thought is to my mind
so my eye is full of love, while my hand is empty.
So my eyes are filled with passion and my hand is saffron

It traveled by night, while pitch-black darkness hid its whereabouts,
The young western night concealed its whereabouts
but a waft of her fragrance betrayed its presence.
As dew formed on it in clusters

And the soaring Eagle had swooped down, following
The soaring eagle took aim
its brother, and night died as dawn was born.
At its brother, and night died when dawn was born

It visited a lovesick man who cannot tell: is it a cauldron
A youth was seized by a passion he did not comprehend
boiling within him with sorrow's fires, or his breast?
Whether it boiled within him from sorrow or his chest

An exile who has reaped life's honey and its colocynth;
A stranger who tasted life’s joy and bitterness
and a young man reaps in life what Time plants.
And youth reaps what fate sows

I long for the house I cannot visit
unless the sea is crossed or the desert traversed.
Unless the sea is crossed or the desert traversed

When separation carries the loved ones' dwelling far away,
When the home of loved ones is distant in my resolve
that is estrangement for them, even if it is not desertion.
That is exile for them though no separation from me

I departed, but on the evening of our parting,
I departed though no eve came between us
neither heart nor patience left with my departing body.
With my body's departure came a heart and no patience

And the sickness of drinking's hangover will dissolve me,
The malady of the wine’s intoxication will waste me away
for the wine, abundant in your mouth, has gone far away.
For its heavy downpour has poured into your mouth

for the freshness of a face whose greeting holds gladness.
For the water of a face whose sight would announce good news to me

Perhaps the pull of nearness will annul distance's sway;
Perhaps distance will negate the authority of nearness
for when hardship contracts, ease unfolds.
So when hardship contracts, ease will expand

Maybe between us affection will remain
and may no life among us reach its appointed end.
And neither of our lives will end before its time

Then tell the people who have made their camp in Sfax:
So say to those who saddle boxed structures
The bird of my heart has a nest in your encampment,
A nest for the bird of my heart in your saddle

And a small chick unable to stand
chatters with his fellows, whose beaks are yellow.
Who crouches over shapes whose plumes are yellow

I will find in them the nectar of my prime quenched

Stretching like a crawling army, so when it sees
Ali's bounty, its rising tide becomes an ebb.
The generosity of Ali, its extend becomes islands

beside a sweet-water sea whose depths have no shore?
Upon the Euphrates sea that has no ebb and flow?

A steed, when affluence pours from its right hand
poverty retreats from the right hands of those who seek him.
Turns away from the poverty of its hunters

It protected its mouth with sword and spear leading the charge
and fang and claw defend the lion's lair.
While fang and claw protect the lion’s den

When we clothed praise in its attributes, it shined
and mention of him perfumes the mouths of rhymes.
And so pure rhymes mouth his mention

It is the lashing tongue from which terror flares up

the first is a wound, the second a probing.
The first being a wound, the last a piercing
