O my messenger, who tells my ears

two tales, of my healing and my sickness,

tell the sun that I do not see her

on a clear day until I see Nuʿm's face.

The sun said, ‘Describe to us the form of a sun

you went mad with love for’; so my anguish doubled.

I said, ‘By God, it has the fairest propor-

-tion; this is the limit of my knowledge in description.

A tender maiden who often defied me: she was

a fire of war, while I was a garden of peace.

And she, dark-lipped, withholds her saliva out of chastity,

yet lets her toothstick drink its fill of it, against my will.

What pearls! Around them is a carnelian

ring that no kissing can unfasten.

Her eyelids have afflicted me with sickness—

a symptom too vast for my body's substance to contain.

O slayer, in my archery contest I see she has

an arrowhead that blunts the point of my own arrow.

An eye of yours has reached the fire, slaying

one whose eye makes your cheek bleed.’
