    فأبْعدُ مطْلوبٍ عليّ قريبُ

    My heart is noble, and my great camel is thoroughbred;

so the farthest object I seek is near to me.

Though my stay with the maiden may prove barren,

my journey into the wilderness is fruitful.

If my resolve is like what hangs in my sword-belts,

then I am a man who strikes hard with two sharp swords.

Take resolve from the coolness of forgetting, for

love of slender maidens, to me, is kin to humiliation.

Hasten, and do not neglect the pale camels' night march; they

carry us at a trot toward success that never fails.

For the bright, radiant stars, though lofty, have

a rising over their horizons and a setting.

Even if resolve brought nothing but movement,

the soul would see its striving there and be glad.

And if a freeborn man's scope narrows in one town,

how many towns there are where scope is wide!

    When you harness resolve, placing

your foot in its stirrup, then you are wise.

And many a woman resented the resolve she recognized in me—

“Your enemy, woman, is dear to me.”

Her tears flowed, with kohl in them, as though they were

    pearls mingled with lapis-lazuli water.

    سيستدرجُ الأعوامَ وهو غريبُ

    And she said, “Jet-black ravens have crept into his parting;

he will pass through the years an exile.”

    Nothing happened but what her mind had foretold;

was the unseen, then, not hidden from her?

Indeed, a fifth has joined day travel, resolve, night marches,

and revisiting the wastes: an old camel bearing a hardy rider.

    هي الكفّ ترْمي أُختها فتصيبُ

    He aimed, and struck care with care as he shot;

it is one hand throwing at its sister and striking true.

He sent the land's ships sailing through a sea of mercury,

a mirage whose two flanks a south wind stirred.

And camels coaxed by chanting into night travel,

when a rapt singer trills his melodies along the way.

When they are unjustly flogged with some of their own hide,

a hard-striding one among them bounds away in flight.

By God, how wondrous the bucket-ropes that resembled

the lead-reins of pale camels filled with weariness!

And many a waste laden with fear, with no safety in it,

where, wherever you travel, you seem a suspect.

As though by crossing it you were guilty of a grievous sin,

and so were repenting of it to the All-Merciful.

When the sun heats its broad expanse, you think its sand

is ash in which a fire has only lately burned.

There you see the creature kicking at the scorching sand as though

it had fallen into fire, beset by sins.

The rising of its voice seems a supplication

when a flame scorches its entrails.

You would think the wilderness had fever, and its water

were a flood of sweat streaming over it.

And the best reserve you could lay by was nothing but

a sandgrouse and a wolf, to sustain fading lives.

And a watcher whose face the sun's scorching heat has not seared,

nor has any pallor from its scorching appeared upon it.

It has a screw within its eye, which it does not turn

for a thirsty soul where the waters swirl.

By its behavior, it watches over the daytime sun—

can a living creature keep watch over the daytime sun?

When the riders dismount, its spirit delights

in riding on the embers of the burning midday heat.

Amid the fire, an ingot takes shape from it,

of gold that does not melt in the blaze.

A deserter of creeds—you would think it

a cross upon every branch in the wilderness.
