Grief over my gray hair banished the joy of youth.

Indeed, gray hair brought darkness when it shone.

I decreed that youth's shade must pass away,

When it shifted away from me and receded.

Do you know any solace for my lost youth?

And whoever finds the illness seeks the cure.

Shall I clothe gray hair in the blackness of dye,

And make night a covering for the dawn?

And how can I hope for constancy from dye,

When I found no constancy in my youth?

And a wind, light in its refreshing breath,

Moaned, moist and cool, and blew gently.

It traveled by night, its rain life's own brother,

Over the dead earth, making the sky weep,

At thunder's voice, which drives the clouds,

As a camel-stallion makes dry she-camels hear his bellow.

And lightning kindles along its two sides

The gleam of swords brandished bare.

    فيا غُرّةَ الصبح هاتي الضياءَ

    So I spent the night in darkness;

Then, O radiant brow of dawn, bring the light!

And O wind, if ever you draw forth the rain

And drench the thirsty dwellings with it,

Then drive the rainless clouds to me,

So I may fill them with water from my tears,

    And my weeping may water youth's dwelling;

For in drought it has always served tears as drink.

Nor leave a ruin in the protected grounds thirsty,

Whether near a raincloud or far away.

And if you do not recognize it, its twigs—

The sun's blaze burns incense from them.

And do not marvel, for the haunts of love—

The fragrance of their soil perfumes the air.

And among them I have a lovesick heart,

From which I took, as provision for my body, a remnant of life.

    Dwellings toward which calamities crept,

As wolves creep through the thickets.

There I kept company with lions in the groves,

And there I visited gazelles in their coverts.

    لبستُ النّعيم بها لا الشقاءَ

    Beyond you, O sea, I have a paradise;

There I wore bliss, not misery.

Whenever I sought a morning from it,

You confronted me as evening, barring my way to it.

And if I were granted my wishes,

When the sea denied me reunion there,

I would ride the crescent across it as a skiff,

Until I embraced Dhukāʾ, the sun, there.
