أَبيعُI sell منَto الأَيّامِthe days عمريmy life وأشتريand I buy
ذنوباًsins كأنيas though I حينwhen أخْسَرُI lose أربحُI profit
I sell my life to the days and buy
I sell my days for a life, and I buy
sins, as though, when I lose, I profit.
Sins, as if when I lose I profit
فهلَّاso why not أذبتُI melted القلبthe heart منfrom حُرَقburning pangs الأسىsorrow
وصَيَّرْتُهُand I turned it into دمعاًtears منfrom العينthe eye يُسفحُis poured forth
Why, then, did I not melt my heart with sorrow's burning pangs
So why don't I melt the heart from the burns of sorrow
and turn it into tears poured forth from the eye?
And make it a tear from the eye that pours down
وأنّىand how وفيand in عُقْبَىthe aftermath of الشبابِyouth عقوبةٌpunishment
أُسَرّI am gladdened بهاby it بئسwretched is السرورُthe joy وأَفرحُand I rejoice
And how, when punishment lies in youth's aftermath,
And how can I, when in the aftermath of youth is a punishment
can I delight in it—what wretched delight!—and rejoice?
That miserable joy takes delight in and I rejoice
