I complain to God of the eye inflammation I have endured,

which joins the anguish of my late afternoons to my predawn hours.

As though the insides of my eyelids, when it flares,

were an army of ants marching under the cover of darkness.

As though the grit and tears had mired it in mud,

so wrenching its legs free of it inflicts pain.

As though my heart's pains came from thrusts exchanged

with thorns between my lashes on one lid and the other.

As though a surging sea were within the eye,

pelting the shores of its two eyelids with stinging grit.

It sends water gushing from the eye whenever it lays,

for a brief sleep, one lid's fire upon the other's.

How many a night I passed utterly bereft of sleep,

and of any sign of dawn breaking bright,

when my eyelid spent the night as my son's milk-brother, sharing with him

the milk of a pitch-black night that fed it in measured portions.

In a ring of darkness, you see no sliver

of dawn's radiance emerging there before the eyes.

As though the East were a merchant who saw a loss

in trading dawn's camphor for night's pitch.

As though the sun had been sent back to a celestial sphere

fixed above all creatures, not revolving.

As though night were ignorant, and so failed to see

that for the full moon's dirham it could take a dinar from the sun.

One of my eyelids complains to the other of the same affliction,

like injustice apportioned between neighbor and neighbor.

So praise be to God, who brings forth light from deep darkness,

and sets night within finely ground stones.

How far people carried their conjectures about this matter,

yet my illness proved close to recovery through the Creator.
