وَجَرَّدْتُand I unsheathed منfrom عزْميmy determination شقيقَthe twin of حُساميmy sword
وَجَرَّدْتُ من عزْمي شقيقَ حُسامي
I cinched my belt around the breast of resolve,
I tightened my belt around the waist of determination
and from my determination unsheathed the twin of my sword.
And stripped my will of the twin of my sword
وقمتُand I rose نهوضlike the rising of العَوْدِa seasoned camel حُلّwas loosened عِقالُهُits hobble
وقمتُ نهوض العَوْدِ حُلّ عِقالُهُ
فأقعدَنيso it made me sit المقدورُfate عندat قياميmy rising
فأقعدَني المقدورُ عند قيامي
I rose like a seasoned camel whose hobble is loosed,
I got up with the intention of one whose fetters were untied
but fate made me sit at the moment of rising.
But destiny seated me as I stood

إذا صاحَ بي أمرٌ من اللّه صيحةً

رجعتُ ورائي والحبيبُ أمامي
When a command from God called to me with a shout,
If a command from Allah calls out to me
I turned back, with my beloved ahead of me.
I will retreat though my beloved is before me

And how can I hope to turn my face toward you,
How can I intend to come to you
when my rein is in the hand of fate?
When my rein is in the grip of fate?

أرى الشيخَ فيها بَعْدَ سِنّ غلامِ
It is nothing but unending exile,
It is but an unending estrangement
in which I see an old man after the years of a boy.
Wherein after old age I see myself a lad

قبيلةَ سامٍ منْ قبيلةِ حامِ
As though the back of my head, through gray hairs, had been given
As if my exile were requited
the tribe of Shem in place of the tribe of Ham.
By Sam's tribe for Ham's tribe

يَمُرّ عليه اليومُ منه كَعامِ
Nothing turns a person's hair gray like living abroad,
Nothing makes a man grey like estrangement
where a day passes over him like a year.
Each day of which seems to him a year

Did I depart but to seek eminence through exile,
Did I travel except seeking sublime purpose?
as though through it I vied with the stars in height?
As if for the stars I were a pointer

Indeed, I am an arrow in my onward flight; if only
I am an arrow in its flight, would that
an archer would send me speeding to my loved ones' home!
I were directed toward the abode of loved ones

Abu al-Hasan, hear an excuse I have sent;
O Abul Hasan, hear my excuse I have sent
so may you ever enjoy honor wedded to permanence.
You remain still, paired with permanence

If you cannot bear to leave a people's land,
If you cannot bear leaving a people
then your sustenance is what you gather by staying.
Sustain yourself with what your stay provides

And you gave voice to a soul yearning for me,
You have conveyed a soul longing for me
as though words from you lay folded within words.
As if your words were woven with words

A letter came to me from you, whose script you had adorned,
A letter came to me, its script embellished
as a cloud's pouring rain embroiders a garden.
As gathering clouds adorn the meadow

I took it from the giver's hand, as though
I took it from a gentle palm as though
I had cooled the heat of thirst with sweet water.
I cooled the heat of noon with sweet water

It moved through my heart with joy, just as
It walked in my conscience with joy as walked
healing's goodness moves through sickness's blight.
The cure of recovery in the illness of fever

As though I had taken my book in my right hand,
As if I grasped the missive in my right hand
and had been told, 'Enter Paradise in peace.'
And was told, "Enter Paradise in peace"

So do not think I have consoled myself for your absence
Think not that I forgot you
with sweet music or a cup of wine.
For the pleasure of music or a cup of wine

Nor did I laugh, could I laugh, without
set my seal upon the silver of tears?
Placing a seal on the outpouring of tears?

When did I willingly choose separation
that prolongs my thirst for reunion's watering-place?
To prolong yearning for the day we meet?

Think not that I fear the cutting of ties
that stretches on while the camels' padded feet bleed.
While the trotting steed keeps trotting on

Its heat breathed upon the smooth skin of my cheek,
My heated soul breathed in the heat
as a smith breathes upon a polished sword.
As the polished sword breathes in its sheath

Nor think me one who stays still on a pitch-black night,
Nor do I stay still on a gloomy night
whose caravan travels through it, scorched by darkness.
Whose riding party roams in deepest dark

When clouds rumble in the sky, their downpour
the snow from its jaws resembles curled foam.
Speaking of youth though hairs are turning white

Did I not mount a longing soul for you

On steeds green of mantle, fleet of foot?

Was I not among the drowning, gesturing with my palm?
Did I not, in the deluge, gesture with my palm
And I escaped only an encounter with my death.
Yet survive only through meeting a dove?

Used to dispel all darkness from my eyelids?

Through all this I hoped to meet you,
I hoped through all this to meet you
so that a soul destroyed by love might pay the price.
So one smitten with love suffers for love

The remainder of loved ones contained
beds have enclosed—beds not lain in for sleep.
In dwellings where none rested in slumber

I took from my times a pledge to safeguard you,
I took the reins of my days for you
yet it proved nothing but treacherous to my pledge.
Yet they betrayed me, slipping the bridle

You scattered in parting in every direction,
You dispersed in estrangement, each direction
like pearls scattered when their string is broken.
Scattered clouds when the sky lost order

One group Time keeps my resolve from reaching;
One group, my will cannot conquer
and another the Romans hold beyond my reach.
Another, my wishes Rome drives away

I will give a bearer of good news who tells me, 'They have gathered,'
Good tidings someone told me, you reunited
the reward of my prayer and fasting, willingly.
Obediently, to gain reward for my prayers

And I await a day when reunion brings together
I await a day when union will join
streams of tears between us, stream with stream.
Tears' bridles between us, bridle to bridle

When I come to you, there will rise for you from his tomb
When I come to you, will you not lay out
one buried in exile, not one buried in dust.
From his tomb the buried estrangement, not buried bodies?
