I adopted in youth a view that I now abandon;
In my youth I took a view that now in age I leave behind,
so you have not seen me on a path you follow.
You'll never see me take a path that you yourself now wind.
وإنand if لمdid not أعاقرْكَI drink with you المدامَwine فإنّنيthen indeed I

And if I have not drunk wine with you, I have
And if I've never censured you when taking a deep drink,
spared the blood of the wineskin that you spill.
I've staunched the blood that you have spilled and left behind to sink.

And life's calamities—my mount is one of them—
For in the turns of life I’ve found my ship cannot withstand
are heavy; its kneeling-places lie at death's watering grounds.
The heavy, blessed ropes of death that it is forced to bind.

I was thrust, powerless to ward off a calamity,
I'm thrust against my will to face a time that does conspire
into an age I wrestle with at every moment,
In every moment new to foil and countermand.

and an army of afflictions pressing in at every hour:
An army of misfortunes presses in on every hour,
the souls of the living are nothing but its casualties.
Can mortal souls survive except what death will grind?

As though the darting lightning flashes were its flashes,
The bolts of lightning snap like bones, the blossoms of the stars
and the bright, gleaming stars its spears.
Burn out and fall to earth like soft meteors to find.

If my soul escapes the wounds of its weapons,
And if my soul escapes the bite of his rapacious sword,
then my head bears what its hooves have stirred up.
My head still raised the storm its sabers dark rain down to blind.

Every age has passed at war with its people;
An age has come and gone still locked in battle with its peers,
and what but its battles can lay lions low?
Can lions shun the vicious fight? It is their life defin'd.

Against my will—and unwilling love holds no pleasure—
Though love and spite for me commingle, in them both joy has birth,
I love my gray hair, while beautiful women loathe it,
I love my fading locks, my wasting form, though pain they bind.
مُغَيّرُaltering حسنيmy beauty عنaway from جميلthe loveliness of رُوائِهِits appearance

وَمُوهِنُand weakening جسميmy body باللياليthrough the nights وناهِكُهand wearing it down
altering the fair appearance of my beauty,
Sulayma saw me and exclaimed, as if the sun had breathed
and weakening my body through the nights, wearing it down.
New life on me and blanched my darkness, no more confin'd.
رَأَتْنيshe saw me سُلَيمَىSulayma والقذالُand the back of the head كأنّماas though

Sulayma saw me, the back of my head as though
Just as Salma looked on Du'bil's head, though peppered gray,
dawn had breathed within it, so its darkness turned white,
She marveled as his smiling hair silver strands did wind.
كماas نَظَرَتْshe looked سلمىSalma إلىat رأسthe head of دعبلٍDiʿbil

as Salma looked at Diʿbil's head,
I glimpse a girl whose eyes match mine, competing in her grace,
and marveled, while his gray hair's laughing gleam made him weep.
Her beauty foils my own, contending charms together twined.

A maiden: I see one eye of mine envying the other,
To reach her beauty veil there lies, who now can rend its shield
vying with it over her beauty and quarreling with it.
When all the prime of life from me has been erased and shrin'd?
عَلىover وَصلِهاunion with her سِترٌa veil فَمَنso who ليfor me بِهَتكِهِto rend it

A veil covers union with her; who will rend it for me
My youth once held the purest wine of love enrapturing,
when the part of life that rends it has passed away from me?
And all the soft gazelles its every whim and want defin'd.

Youth, which holds love's highest winning arrow,
It's as though no gentle doves could cheer my lonesome heart,
and whatever servitude you wish from doll-like beauties, it commands.
Indifferent, languid glances have my will entwined.

As though my loneliness had never been soothed, from among the herd,
A gazelle who found me verse reciting was possessed
by one with an earring-adorned ear and a languid, deadly glance—
By a co-rival in each moment flanking side-aligned.
غَزالٌa gazelle تَرانيyou see me ناصِباًsetting منfrom تَغَزّليmy love verse

a gazelle: you see me fashioning, from my love verse,
I turned the wine cask's spout toward a rain shower streaming down
a snare for it that accompanies it in every state.
Colliding with its pouring flow the wine and water joined.
وصادٍand a thirsty one إلىfor ريّthe refreshment of الكؤوسِthe cups غَمَرْتُهُI drenched him

And a thirsty one, yearning for the cups' refreshment, I drenched
And said, "Imbibe the coffee's aroma from its clay urn
with their rain cloud, while the rain's swollen clouds poured.
Till in your hangover's cap all will be strained and pined.”
وَقُلتُand I said اغتَبِقْdrink in the evening مِنfrom دَنِّهاits wine jar صرفَunmixed قَهوةٍwine

And said, 'Drink pure wine at evening from its jar,
A froth prevents its gentle scent from suddenly taking flight,
whose channels lead into the drinking companion's cup.'
Circling its rim a lace, a net round its mouth entwined.
وَيَمنَعُهاand prevents it مِنfrom أَنْto تَطيرَfly لَطافَةًthrough sheer lightness

And what keeps it from taking flight from sheer lightness
A garden blossoms as if kings lie prostrate 'mong its beds,
is foam upon it, whose meshes form circles.
Their bodies flush as the bright beads around their necks aligned.

Among the flowers of a lush garden, you would take the hills
The courtyard pool frozen overnight as hail pelted down,
for kings, its tufted robes draped upon their bodies.
Our fires melted icy shards as morning rays reclin'd.

And the water's silver lay frozen overnight in the cold
Is that or aunta’s tyranny to hobble dancing girls,
for us, while the ingots of lightning's gold melted.
Shackling their ankles in its clasp with rings their feet to bind?

Is that better, or forcing one's way across a desert plain
If e'er a night for travel comes with mules in file prest,
whose piled-up sand hobbles the padded feet of noble camels?
Caparisoned their bridles, saddled, to the road consign'd,

And if night falls, toward its travelers come
Called "death defying" landmarks speck the desert's barren wastes,
its ghouls and brigands, charging boldly.
But no real living can be found except these risks to mind.

Its deadly wastes are called 'places of deliverance,' for good omen,
On a crumbling wall I sought to build my hut and there erect
yet deliverance comes only by crossing its deadly wastes,
A shelter, which when done, came crashing down to crush and grind.

on a mount offering a bow-shaped back at morning departure;
My critic, senseless luxury is a crucifix,
I built the saddle upon it, and its lofty part collapsed.

O woman who reproaches me, dignified composure is a stone,
hard and unyielding; with fortitude I chew it.

and in the edge of the Indian-steel sword lies its cutting power.
