How long will you shun me and cast me away?
How long will you shun and exclude me
Alas! I found my loved ones like my enemies.
Woe to me, I found my loved ones to be my enemies
هُمْthey أظمؤُونيmade me thirst إلىfor ماءِwater اللّمىthe lips' dark hue ظمأًa thirst

تَرَحّلَjourneyed away الرِّيُّthe quenching of thirst بيwith me منهُfrom it عنِaway from الماءِwater
They made me thirst for the water of dusky lips—a thirst
They thirst me to the water of tears out of thirst
Whose quenching carried me far away from water.
The wind has moved away from me from the water
وخالفونيَand they disappointed me فيماin what كنْتُI was آمُلُهُhoping for it

And they disappointed me in what I had hoped for
And they opposed me in what I was hoping from them
From them; many a remedy has become like the disease.
And many a medicine turned out like a disease

I could not—and my excuse is plain—
I'm tired because of you, and my excuse is not hidden
Tame the stubborn traits of a maiden.
Enduring hardship is the quality of a chaste woman
ياO هَذِهِyou there هَذِهِthis عَينيmy eye الَّتيwhich نَظَرتْgazed

O you there, this eye of mine that gazed
Oh, these eyes of mine that looked
Drenches my mornings and evenings with tears.
Shed tears morning and evening

My eye clothed me in sickness from your two eyes.
From your eyelashes misfortune befell my sight
So my body casts no shadow among the shadows.
So my body has no shelter among shelters
وَكُلُّand every جَدْبٍdrought لَهfor it الأنوَاءُthe rains ماحِيةٌeffacing

And every drought is wiped away by rains,
And every barren land, the clouds rain on it
Yet my rains do not erase my body's drought.
But my barren body, my clouds do not rain on it

Indeed, I am fidelity's glowing embers, a source of light,
I am burning embers that can be illuminated
And you, through betrayal, choose to extinguish me.
But you choose to extinguish me with betrayal

قدindeed عادَreturned بعدafter صَنَاعٍa skilled woman نقضُunraveling by خرقاءِa clumsy woman
Far be it from you to incur the censure in the proverb:
Far from you what blame has required in the like of
A clumsy woman's unraveling has followed a skilled woman's work.
Undoing the patch after repair is the work of the foolish

Reproaching you offers no reconciliation for me to await;
Your reproach contains no real blame, so beware of it
Can peace be inferred from battle?
Can you deduce peace from provocation?
ولاnor لوعدكِfor your promise إنجازٌfulfillment أفوزُI attain بهِit

Nor is there fulfillment of your promise for me to attain;
Your promise has no fulfillment I can win
And how can a desert mirage quench a burning thirst?
How can handsful of desert sand quench thirst?

You who rebuke me for my steadfast self-control when it faltered:
You blame me while I'm composed, but my composure
My self-control faltered only before a slender-waisted woman.
Did not remain except at the time of confusion

Give up devising a cure for a sick man's torment;
Leave the ruse of innocence in excusing the sick
Indeed, the indicated remedy is a dark-lipped woman's saliva.
The one referred to is the secretion of the tearful

A wasted sufferer returns the greetings of the women visiting him,
A suffering one who returns the greetings of the returning women
Like a drowning man when he prays by gestures.
Like a drowning man gestures when praying

It is as though, when seeking healing from a beautiful woman
It's as if when he gets healed by a singing girl
Other than the miserly one, he attacks disease with disease.
He throws the disease to the disease

Among the stars there is no substitute for the midmorning sun,
There is no substitute for the sun at dawn among the planets
Nor any for Asma among Asma's peers.
Nor the equals of Asma in the chamber of Asma
