وفضفاضَةٍand a loose-fitting coat of mail خضراءَgreen ذاتِwith حبائكٍinterwoven meshes
وفضفاضَةٍ خضراءَ ذاتِ حبائكٍ
إذاwhen لُبِسَتْit is worn فاضَتْit flows علىover بَطَلٍa champion كفوِworthy
إذا لُبِسَتْ فاضَتْ على بَطَلٍ كفوِ
And a loose-fitting green coat of mail, with interwoven mesh—
when worn, it flows over a worthy champion.
لهاit has لينُsoftness لمسٍof touch لاnot يخافُfears خشونَةًharshness
لها لينُ لمسٍ لا يخافُ خشونَةً
تشافههاmeets it face-to-face منfrom حدّthe edge of ذيone bearing شُطَبٍgrooves مُهْوِstriking downward
تشافهها من حدّ ذي شُطَبٍ مُهْوِ
It has a softness of touch that fears no harshness
that meets it from the edge of a downward-striking, grooved sword.
علىdespite أنّهاits being منof نَسْجِthe weaving of داودDavid نَثْرَةٌa coat of mail
على أنّها من نَسْجِ داود نَثْرَةٌ
أدقّfiner علىto الأبصارthe eyes منthan أثرa trace of الرّفوِdarning
أدقّ على الأبصار من أثر الرّفوِ
Though it is a mail coat of David’s weaving,
it is finer to the eye than a trace of darning.
تروقكَdelights you منهاin it زُرقةٌblueness فكأنّهاand as though it were
تروقكَ منها زُرقةٌ فكأنّها
سماءٌa sky بَدَتْappeared للعينِto the eye فيin رونقْthe radiance of الصحوِclear weather
سماءٌ بَدَتْ للعينِ في رونقْ الصحوِ
Its blueness delights you, as though it were
a sky revealed to the eye in the radiance of clear weather.
تردّit wards off الرّدىdeath عنfrom ذِمرِهاits champion فكأنّهاand as though it
تردّ الرّدى عن ذِمرِها فكأنّها
تَذَرّعُit seeks protection منfrom سُخْطِthe wrath of الأسِنّةِthe spearheads بالعفوِwith pardon
تَذَرّعُ من سُخْطِ الأسِنّةِ بالعفوِ
It wards death from its champion, as though it
shielded itself from the spearheads’ wrath with pardon.
