And a lofty-nosed, preeminent lord of the ruling house,

Whose lineage is traced to great men with lofty noses.

    كم دارِعٍ أرداه رمحُ الحاسِرِ

    He slays the fully armored warrior, though himself unarmored;

How many a mailed warrior has the unarmored man's spear slain!

And he kindles the fires of war with a keen blade,

Like a stream of water, plunging deep into skulls.

In a mighty host advancing into battle,

With a sky of wings and an earth of hooves.

And a dust-cloud like a closely gathered cloud,

    Above the heads, over the lightning of cleaving swords;

It laughed aloud while the warriors scowled,

With blows upon helmet-crests and mail coifs.

And it is as though the sleek horses beneath their defenders

Were eagles of the sky, winged with lions.

And the full-length mail coats upon the warriors are woven meshes,

Like water's bubbles or scattered braids.

And it is as though the sword-points were molars,

Grinding in the mouth of snarling Death.

Never did I measure his valor against a warrior's fierceness

Without judging him to possess overwhelming superiority.

Indeed, courage dwells in defenders, yet it

Is stronger still in the unyielding, steadfast man.

So the champions of battle fear his deadly assault

As weak birds fear the swooping eagle,

With the point of a brown spear, stringing chests together,

And the edge of a white sword, scattering skulls.

    تِلكَ السجايا مِن سجايا الناصِرِ

    Traits of al-Mansur appear in him;

Those qualities come from the qualities of al-Nasir.

Indeed, the branches bear witness to the roots,

Declaring the excellence of virtues and origins,

From every awe-inspiring man of the crest of Himyar,

Forbidding and commanding with the tongues of cleaving swords.
