خطابٌa message عنfrom لقائكمُmeeting you يَعُوقُhinders
وَمِثْليand one like me لاnot يُناطُis attributed بهto him العقوقُneglect
A message keeps me from meeting you,
A message about meeting you hinders me
and one like me cannot be charged with neglect.
And one like me should not be disobedient
أأقدرcan I أنْthat يُقَدَّرَbe ordained ليfor me زمانٌa time
لهit has خُلُقٌa disposition بأُلفَتِناto our fellowship خليقُsuited
Can I have a time ordained for me
Can I expect a time to be destined for me
whose disposition befits our fellowship,
Whose nature accords with our intimacy?
فيقبضso shortens بُعْدَناour separation ليلٌa night عَدوٌّhostile
ويبسطand prolongs قُربَناour nearness يومٌa day صديقُfriendly
so that a hostile night shortens our separation
So a hostile night seizes our distance
and a friendly day prolongs our nearness?
And a friendly day expands our nearness
لَقَدindeed حَنَّتْyearned إلىfor مَثواكَyour dwelling نَفسيmy soul
كمُرْزِمَةٍlike a lowing she-camel إلىfor وَطَنٍa homeland تتوقُlongs
Indeed, my soul has yearned for your dwelling,
Indeed my soul yearned for your dwelling
like a lowing she-camel longing for home.
Like a bundle yearning for its homeland
تَحَمّلَdeparted بالنّوَىwith separation عنِّيfrom me التأسّيconsolation
وحَمّلَنيand burdened me الأَسىsorrow ماwhat لاnot أُطيقُI can bear
Consolation departed from me with separation,
It endured the intimacy on my behalf
and sorrow burdened me with what I cannot bear.
And loaded me with unbearable sorrow
وَحَمّرَand reddened دمعيَmy tears المبيضَّwhite حُزْنٌgrief
يذوبmelts بحرِّهِin its heat قَلبيmy heart المشوقُyearning
And grief reddened my white tears,
A sadness made my shedding tears red
in whose heat my yearning heart melts.
With its heat my yearning heart melts
كأنَّas though العينَthe eye تُسْقِطُpours forth مِنهُfrom it عيناًa spring
فَلُؤلُؤهُso its pearls إِذاwhen ذَرَفَتit sheds tears عَقيقُcarnelian
As though the eye pours forth a spring of sorrow,
As if the eye drops from it another eye
so its pearls, when the eye weeps, are carnelian.
So its pearl weeps sincere agony
وهَبنيand suppose that I قدalready قدحتُI struck زنادَthe flint of عزمٍresolve
تضرّمَblazed فيamid الأناةpatient deliberation لهfor it حريقُa fire
And suppose I have struck the flint of resolve,
And it endowed me when I ignited determination’s flint
whose blaze flared amid patient deliberation—
Which in my slowness, its flame kindled
ألَيْسَdoes not اللَّهGod ينفذcarry out منهfrom Him حكماًa decree
فَيعقلنيso fetters me بهwith it وأَناwhile I am الطّليقُfree
does God not carry out a decree of His,
Does not God execute through it a decree
and so fetter me with it, though I am free?
By which He reasons with me, and I am unrestrained?
فرَغتُI have finished منَwith الشبابِyouth فَلَستُso I am not أَرنوI gaze
إلىtoward لهوٍamusement فيشغلنيso engrosses me الرّحيقُpure wine
I have left youth behind; I no longer look
I am done with youth, so I no longer hope
toward amusement, to be engrossed by pure wine.
For frivolity which would distract me from the wine
ولاnor أَناI فيin صقليةٍSicily غلاماًa youth
فتلزمنيso bind me لكلّfor every هوىًpassion حُقوقُclaims
Nor am I a youth in Sicily,
Nor am I, in my prime, a boy
for every passion to lay claims upon me,
Obliged to every passion by duties
لَياليَon nights تُعْمِلُputs to work الأَفراحُjoys كَأسيmy cup
فماso not ليfor me غيرother than ريقِthe saliva of الكأسِthe cup ريقُsaliva
on nights when merriment kept my cup busy,
Nights make my cup work joy
so I had no saliva but the cup's own.
So I have nothing but the sip of the cup a sip
تَجَنَّبْتُI shunned الغِوايَةَwaywardness عنout of رَشادٍsound judgment
كماjust as يَتَجَنّبُshuns الكَذبَlying الصّدوقُthe truthful man
I shunned waywardness through sound judgment,
I avoided misguidance with insight
as a truthful man shuns lies,
As the truthful avoids lies
وَإِنand though كانَتwere صباباتُardent longings of التصابيplaying young

though the longings of youthful dalliance
And if the vanities of passions
have flashes of lightning gleaming across my words.
Flash their lightning bolts at my words
كَتَبتُI wrote إِلَيكِto you فيat سِتينَsixty عاماًyears
فساحاًample فيin خطايَmy steps بهنّthrough them ضيقُconstraint
I wrote to you at sixty years of age—
I wrote to you at sixty years
ample years, yet they have cramped my steps.
So widely in my sins, though narrow
ومنand whoever يرحلْjourneys إلىtoward السبعينseventy عاماًyears
فمعتَرَكُthen the battlefield of المنونdeath لهfor him طريقُa road
And whoever journeys toward seventy years
And whoever travels to seventy years
has death's battlefield for his road.
The arena of death is his path
أَباO father of الحسنِal-Hasan انتَشِقْinhale مِنِّيfrom me سلاماًa greeting
كأنّas though نسميهits two wafts مسكٌmusk فتيقُunsealed
Abu al-Hasan, inhale a greeting from me,
O Abu Al-Hassan, pluck safety from me
as though its two wafts were unsealed musk.
As if my breath were musk, so smell it
وقلّand rare is لدىfor عليلٍa sick man عندduring كربٍanguish
تناولُthe attainment of راحةٍrelief فيهاin it يفيقُhe recovers
And seldom does a sick man in anguish
And say to one who is ill in distress
find relief in which he recovers.
"Take comfort in which he will awaken"
أرىI see القدَرَfate المُتَاحَallotted إذاwhen رآنيit sees me
جريتُI ran جَرَىit ran فكانso it was هوit السّبوقُthe one that outstrips
I see allotted fate: whenever it sees me
I see destined proportion, when it saw me
run, it runs, and it is the one that outstrips me.
I proceeded, so it was outrun
فلاso do not تيْأسْdespair فللرحمنِfor the All-Merciful has لُطْفٌgentle grace
يُحَلّis untied بِيُسْرِهِby its ease العَقْدُthe knot الوثيقُtightly bound
So do not despair: the All-Merciful has grace
So do not despair, for the Merciful has kindness
by whose ease the tightly bound knot is undone.
Which unravels the tight knot easily
