If my reproachers submitted to your face,
If only my critics would surrender to your beauty,
I would hope to be safer in love.
I would hope to find salvation through love.
كَيفَhow السَبيلُthe way لِكَتمِto conceal أسرارِsecrets of الهَوىpassion

وَلِسانُand the tongue of دَمعيmy tears بِالغَرامِof ardent love يُترجمُinterprets
How can the secrets of passion be concealed,
How can I conceal my passion's secrets
when the tongue of my tears interprets my ardent love?
When my tears translate my devotion?
لامَreproached العَواذِلُthe reproachers كُلَّevery صادٍthirsting one لِلّقاfor the meeting

وَمَلامُهُمand their reproach عَينُthe very essence of الخَطاerror إنif يَعلَمواthey know
The reproachers blamed everyone thirsting for a meeting;
The censurers blame all lovers,
their reproach is error itself, if only they knew.
Yet the fault is theirs if they but understood.
لَمdid not يَعلَمواthey know بِمَنfor whom الهَوىthe passion لَكِنَّهُمbut they
لامواthey reproached لعلمهمُbecause of their knowing بِأنيthat I am مُغرَمُlove-struck
They did not know whom I loved, yet they
They know not for whom is my love,
reproached me because they knew I was love-struck.
Yet blame me for they know I'm enamored.
لامُواthey reproached ولَمَّاand not yet يأتِهِمreached them تأويلُthe explanation of ماwhat

لامُواthey reproached عَلَيهِfor it لأنهمbecause they لَمdid not يَفهَمواunderstand
They reproached me, though no explanation had yet reached them of what
They censure without comprehending,
they reproached me for, because they did not understand.
For they cannot grasp what they condemn.
إِنif أَبْرَمونيthey wear me down بِالمَلامِwith reproach فَإنَّthen indeed ليI have

If they wear me down with reproach, I have
Though they denounce me, I have patience -
a patience that will unravel all they have bound fast.
All their accusations will dissolve.
ماnot شاهَدُواthey saw ذاكَthat الجَمالَbeauty وَقَدand already بَدَاit appeared

They have not seen that beauty, though it has appeared;
They never beheld that beauty unveiled,
so I am deaf to reproach, while they are blind.
So I'm deaf to blame while they are blind.

And even if they know that I have loved, still
If they guess that I'm impassioned,
the passion of hearts has a secret that cannot be known.
For the heart's love is a hidden affair.

Silence is safer if they reproach me for love,
Silence is best if they upbraid me for love,
yet my heart speaks through love's anguish.
Though my heart reveals all through my longing.

I have indeed concealed my love for you, but my eye
I hid my love for you but my eyes,
does not conceal its longing for your dwelling.
Desiring your beauty, cannot conceal.

I weep carnelian, which is my tears; and the ghada wood
I weep ruby tears, this anguish,
is what is kindled between my ribs.
Is a fire blazing within my being.

Tears flowing in the beloved's land -
alas for that supplicant who is shown no mercy!
Woe to the suppliant who finds no mercy!

My love's tumult is a ceaseless tale
beginning with tears that pour down.
Commencing with tears that illuminate.

O my reproacher, I have gone mad with love for them,
My critics! I'm maddened with love for them
and I resolve to go nowhere but their homelands.
And desire none but their homelands.

If I'm resolved to repent, I cannot -
exorcist who can ever cure that madness.
My insanity for them is destined.

They are the beloveds - whether they spurn or embrace
and my goal, whether they torment me or grant me bliss.
And my goal - be they harsh or kind.

If they maintain union, night is white and radiant;
Their affection makes the night radiant,
if they sever ties, morning is black and dark.
Their abandonment makes dawn dark.

Night wrongs me, growing dark after their departure,
The night dims after they've gone
but my reproacher is more unjust about my love for them.
But my blindness in love is darker.

Though dawns are bright with tears,
whose flooding downpour the stars have never matched.
The stars gleam not with their radiance.

Our loves! How unlawful for me is loyalty,
while your lawful union is forbidden to me!
And lawful their estrangement.

My departing beloved, your love takes my life -
my longing for you; may you live and be safe.
May you live on and be safe!

My body, in its thinness, is lighter than the breeze,
My body is lighter than breeze, so lean,
yet I am weighed down by the tormenting sickness you have caused.
Yet heavy with sickness away from you.

And you are, in truth, still you.

Traces of the best Messenger - through them, healing -

Ailments of sins for the anxious penitent.

He is a mercy to mankind, guiding -
for the obstinate opponent: he will not be shown mercy.
Woe to those who disbelieve; no mercy finds.

While Hellfire fuels the tyrants.

Lest suffering or harm afflict.

Shooting stars repelled with his blessings.

Through him, devils were cast out,
their soothsayers of knowing the unseen to come.
And their diviners lost knowledge from the unseen.

Kisra's vaulted hall split apart, then fell
Khosrau’s palace cracked and its balconies collapsed,
its battlements; indeed, it brought terror as it was demolished.
Terror toppled his edifice.

The sea foamed and Persia’s fires were extinguished -
after it had been kindled and stoked.
Once flaring, now subdued.

Illuminated while darkness prevailed.

His holy spirit with Gabriel to serve.

Your lasting miracle defeats all eloquence -

You were victorious by striking terror
a means of purification, where people pray or perform dry ablution.
Into the hearts of your enemies by dawn.
