ليI have صاحِبٌa friend أخطأتُI erred فيin وُدِّهِaffection for him
لي صاحِبٌ أخطأتُ في وُدِّهِ
وَلَيسَand not يَخلوis free بَشرٌa human being مِنfrom غَلَطerror
وَلَيسَ يَخلو بَشرٌ مِن غَلَط
I have a friend whom I was wrong to love;
I have a friend I wronged in his affection
And no human being is free from error.
And no mortal is free from faults
أعدَدتُI readied مِنهُfrom him فيagainst العِدىthe enemies صارِماًa sharp sword
أعدَدتُ مِنهُ في العِدى صارِماً
فَكانَand he was لَكِنbut لِفؤاديfor my heart فَقَطonly
فَكانَ لَكِن لِفؤادي فَقَط
I readied him as a sharp sword against enemies;
I readied against him a cutting blade
And a sword he was—but for my heart alone.
But it was only for my heart alone
