    A faded trace stirred longing,

    so long you remained despondent,

because you saw the dwelling desolate

at Lughāṭ—how many Rajabs it has seen!

Hind's dwelling at al-Sitār, though already

the cord of the bond had frayed and snapped,

between the two valleys' streams, like

books finely penned by Mundhir's two sons.

The birds told you, when they passed to the right,

and the shaggy raven, when it croaked,

    that Hind was not nearby

at the dwellings, just as he had supposed.

And many an amorous woman, not close by,

whose gratitude I won for long years,

then swore she would not speak to us—

every living soul has its turns of fortune.

Indeed, I resort to a company

who observe fine manners among themselves.

Then I give even the uninvited drink, and never

was I a ravenous dog among them.

And many an armored warrior I have stalked,

    whose encounter was no game:

we broke off, with a remnant of life in him,

his upper chest blood-caked and stained.

We staked our lives against each other; sometimes

    the refuge-seeker defeats the valiant.

Indeed, I kept ties with a kinsman,

and looked with a wondering gaze.

From the heights of Ḥawrān I said to him,

    while we both watched intently,

“O ʿUbayd, do you see women traveling in litters,

    approaching in bands and groups,

    roaming, taking trackless ways together,

from the heights of Ḥāʾil, close at hand,

    crossing the hollow of Māfiqah,

    racing toward al-Hajm and al-Qarab,

    crossing together at al-Ghuṭāṭ,

through ravines from the heights of ʿĀzif?”

“Do you then take them,” I said, “for tamarisks,

or palms whose fresh dates have ripened?”

And on the camel-litters are does with fawns,

wearing pearls and gold as everyday adornment.

Convey a message to the kings,

those far away in the land or near,

that around me, among the peaks of Ajaʾ,

are slippery crags you would take for idols.

Around them our beasts of burden graze,

    eating thorn-trees and kanab plants.

O little lightning-flash—I spent the night watching it,

    sheltering in the rainclouds, concealed.

All night it climbed into the sky, as though

a woman of al-Ḥīrah had set reeds ablaze.

Beneath it was a wind from Yemen,

    stirring a raincloud with trailing fringes;

it pours down water while the wind is still,

but when the wind rages against it, it roils.

So let the sons of Thuʿal graze its pasture,

and let its rain water the grasses,

and the sons of Jarm, though they claimed

    that my poetry was tangled.

I am not what they claimed:

at the heart of Ṭayyiʾ by descent.

I am from Ghaḍbah, which scaled

a summit and has never been a tail.
