Welcome to her, a maiden who came untouched,

revealing to us a radiant brow.

Her words make one forget steeds racing

toward the goal of excellence, and swords in their keenness.

I beheld her before dawn; she had already come

to my dwelling, as affection wished, at evening.

I had not known that night could bring forth

Dhukāʾ, the sun—until she came to me.

But I gained no gifts of union with her

until the light of forenoon appeared and shone.

She came to set forth an apology in verse whose

    adornments outshone the beautiful maiden.

Gently, Abū al-Faḍl, who in his excellence

and his affection has left mankind behind.

It is not my nature to blame a friend; rather,

I offer him constant thanks and praise.

And if one whose affection I trusted shuns me,

my response is leniency and forbearance.

He never treats me with cruel estrangement

without my offering affection and fidelity.

That being so, what of one who bestowed his affection

unalloyed, and spread his sincerity as shade?

I would call myself a liar if I had subjected him,

    after prolonged praise, to invective.

How strange that he is said to have offended in his verse—

a friend who gave his friend whatever he wished!

Whoever comes attributing words of insult to me

is himself the one who said them and did wrong.

My verse, which sought a reply at forenoon, came in

a spirit of companionship, not of vexatious insistence.

That said, your poetry, as I know it, is a garden

whose beauties display radiance and glory.

Its qualities make one forget the northern breezes whenever

they come to visit the luxuriant garden.

Far from it! Its meanings cannot be hidden,

delicate and delightful in beauty and radiance.

Pay no heed to one who comes meddling

in speech, never drawing back the rein out of shame.

So I never cease recounting your virtues,

and fill the assemblies with thanks for your bounty.

I have built love's edifice in my heart; it shall not

fear effacement with the passage of time.
