أمِنْهاwas it from her? سرَىtraveled by night طيفٌa phantom إليّto me حَبيبُdear
وليسَand there is no سوَىother than نجْمa star السّماءِof the sky رَقيبُwatcher
Was it from her that a dear phantom came to me by night,
From it came a phantom of my beloved to me
with none but the star of heaven keeping watch?
With no witness but the star in the sky
أتىit came وظلامُand the darkness الليلِof night يَسْحَبُdrags ذَيْلَهُits train
وللبَرْقِand lightning has ثغْرٌa mouth فيin دُجاهُits gloom شَنيبُwith pearly teeth
It came while the darkness of night dragged its train,
He came while the darkness of night was trailing its skirt
and lightning had a pearly-toothed mouth within its gloom.
And lightning had a gap-toothed mouth in its gloom
تطلّعَrose into view خفّاقَfluttering الجَناحِof wing كأنّهُas though it were
فؤادُthe heart مُحِبٍّof a lover قدalready جفاهُhad forsaken him حَبيبُa beloved
It rose into view, fluttering its wings, as though it were
The fluttering of its wings was as though
the heart of a lover whose beloved had forsaken him.
It were the heart of a lover abandoned by their beloved
وهيْهاتَand far from possible يشفِيheals القَلْبَthe heart طيْفُthe phantom خَيالِهاof her image
وقدand indeed علِمَتْshe knows أنّthat الخَيالَthe apparition كَذوبُdeceitful
Yet her spectral image is far from healing the heart,
Alas! The phantom of her image cannot heal the heart
and she knows that the apparition is deceitful.
For it has learned that phantoms are lies
إذاwhen قرُبَdraws near الإصْباحُdaybreak غادرَit leaves بعْدهُin its wake
فؤاديَmy heart يَصْبوyearns والدّموعَand the tears تَصوبُstream down
When dawn draws near, it leaves in its wake
When dawn approached, it left afterwards
my heart yearning, and tears streaming down.
Leaving my heart yearning as tears poured down
أبانit revealed غراميmy passion يومَthe day بانَit departed عنِfrom الحِمىthe protected abode
وقدand already بانَhad appeared منfrom فوْدِthe temple الظلامِof darkness مَشيبُgray hair
It revealed my passion the day it left the sanctuary,
My passion appeared the day the fever broke
and gray hair had appeared at the temple of darkness.
And the first white hair was seen in the darkness
فأذهبَso it took away صبْريmy patience والفؤادَand the heart وسَلوَتيand my solace
فلمْso not يَبْقَremain إلاexcept مدْمَعٌa tearful eye ونَحيبُand sobbing
So it took away my patience, my heart, and my solace,
So my patience, heart, and tranquility left
and nothing remained but a tearful eye and sobbing.
Leaving nothing but tears and lamentations
ألاbehold فيin سبيلthe cause الحُبّof love قلبٌa heart مُقلَّبٌtossed about
مَشوقٌyearning لتَذْكارِfor remembrance العُهودِof past days طَروبُrapturous
Behold, in love's cause, a heart is tossed about,
Indeed, on the path of love is an oft-turning heart
yearning, enraptured by the remembrance of bygone days.
Yearning for the memories of past vows
ألاbehold إنهاindeed it is الذّكرىremembrance وإنْand even if بعُدَlies far away الحِمىthe protected abode

تُجدُّrenews لديّwithin me الوجْدَlonging حينَwhen تَثوبُit returns
Behold, it is remembrance, though the sanctuary lies far away,
Indeed, those memories - though the fever has passed -
that renews my longing whenever it returns.
Revive ardor in me when they recur
وإنّand indeed التيshe who قدindeed هِمْتُI became love-mad وجْداًwith longing بحُسْنِهاfor her beauty

وبالقلبِand in the heart منهاfrom her لوعَةٌburning anguish ووجيبُand throbbing
And indeed, she whose beauty has driven me mad with longing,
She whose beauty made me swoon with ardor
and from whom my heart feels burning anguish and throbbing,
Bringing agony and sighs to my heart
لَتُخْجِلُsurely puts to shame بدْرَthe full moon الوجْدِof longing وهْوَthough it is مُتمّمٌfull
وتُزْريand casts scorn بغصْنِon a bough البانِof the ban tree وهوwhile it is رَطيبُsupple
surely shames the moon of longing, though it is full,
Would put the full moon’s ardor to shame
and puts the bough of the ban tree to shame, though it is supple.
And make the slender branch seem most fragrant
فلولاكِso, but for you ياO أخْتَsister الغزالَةِof the gazelle لمnot أهِمْI would love madly
ولاnor رابَtroubled قلْبيmy heart منfrom هواكِloving you مُريبُa cause of unease
So, but for you, O sister of the gazelle, I would not have loved madly,
Were it not for you, oh gazelle-like sister
nor would any disquiet from loving you have troubled my heart.
My heart would not be troubled by love for you
إذاwhen ألَّمَafflicts المشتاقَthe yearning lover وجْدٌlonging علىamid النّوىseparation
فليْسَthen there is no سِوىother than ذِكْرremembrance الحبيبِof the beloved طبيبُphysician
When longing afflicts the yearning lover amid separation,
When ardor afflicts the longing lover
then no physician exists but remembrance of the beloved.
Nothing heals but thoughts of the beloved
وكمْand how many عائِدٍa sickbed visitor زادَتْincreased عِيادتُهُhis visit الأسىthe sorrow
ولوْyet if عُدْتِyou visited قرّتْwould find comfort أعيُنٌeyes وقُلوبُand hearts
And many a visitor to the sick has deepened sorrow with his visit,
How many recurring visits increased sorrow
yet if you visited, eyes and hearts would find comfort.
If only you would return, eyes and hearts would rejoice
فذِكْرُكِso remembrance of you حظّthe share النّفسِof the soul فيin كلّevery خَطرةٍpassing thought

فياso, oh لَيْتَwould that حظَّthe share العَينِof the eye منكِof you قريبُwere near
For remembrance of you is the soul's share in every passing thought;
Your memory is the soul’s fortune in every peril
oh, would that the eye's share of you were near!
If only the eyes’ fortune were to see you soon

I marveled how one like me came to be in the sanctuary,
I wonder how one like me came to swoon with passion
calling out, with no answer from you in the encampment.
Crying out when no answer comes from your quarters

لَدىduring النّظمِverse-making عذْبٌsweet للوُرودِfor those coming to drink شَروبُpleasant to drink
Although my words are pearls harmoniously strung,
Though my words are evenly-spaced pearls
when composed in verse, a sweet draught for those who come to drink.
Sweet as roses to the ears when composed into verse

When my reed pen employs them upon the pages,
If I were to craft them into a poem, they would please me
a panegyric delights, or love verse grows tender.
Whether praising or gently reproaching a kinsman
نَسيبيَmy love poetry ممْدودٌfar-reaching ولكنْbut قَصَرْتُهُI confined it
علىto مَنone who لَهاto her البدْرُthe full moon المُنيرُshining نَسيبُa kinsman
My love poetry stretches far, yet I have confined it
My reproach is brief though my kinsman is noble
to her whose kinsman is the shining full moon.
For the brilliant moon itself is his kinswoman
ومدْحيand my praise علىfor منْhim who جادَgave generously قبلَbefore سُؤالِهasking him
ومنْand him who أرْكَبَgave mounts to الآمالَhopes وهْيَthough they are رَكوبُriding beasts
And my praise is for him who gave generously before being asked,
My praise is for one who gave generously before asked
and who set hopes riding, though they themselves are mounts.
Who mounted hopes though they were shaky
هوhe الملِكُthe king الأعْلىthe most exalted الهُمامُthe magnanimous one الذيwho غَداhas become
لدَيْهِwith him مجالُthe field العِزof glory وهْوand it is رَحيبُspacious
He is the supreme king, the magnanimous one, who now
He is the supreme king, the man of resolve
has a spacious field of glory before him.
For whom the range of glory is wide
فيَهْميso pours down نَداهُhis bounty كلّماwhenever بَخِلَwithholds itself الحَياthe rain
وإنand if مطَلَdelays الإصْباحُdaybreak عنهfor it يَنوبُhe stands in
So his bounty pours down whenever the rain grows miserly,
In every hardship, I hear his call
and if dawn delays, he takes its place.
Even when dawn is late to relieve the night
فتُسْعَفُso are aided قُصّادٌpetitioners وتُقْضىand are fulfilled مآرِبٌwishes
ويمْرَعُand grows fertile منof ربْعِthe dwelling العُفاةِof seekers of bounty جَديبُbarren ground
Thus petitioners are aided, and wishes are fulfilled,
So needs are met and wishes fulfilled
and barren ground in the supplicants' abode grows lush.
And the barrens bloom after being dry

فتنعَمُso take pleasure أسْماعٌears بهin it وقُلوبُand hearts
The fragrance of praise for him wafts from the panegyrics,
From his excellent praise comes the scent of sweet words
and ears and hearts delight in it.
That delight hearing ears and hearts
أمَوْلايَO my lord عُذْراًpardon إنّindeed وصْفَكَdescribing you مُعجِزٌbeyond one's powers
ولوْand even if جاءَcame بشّارٌBashshar بهwith it وحَبيبُand Habib
O my lord, pardon me: you are beyond description,
Excuse me, my prince, for describing you defeats me
even if Bashshar and Habib were to bring it forth.
Even if Bashar were here to help his dear friend
ولكننيbut I أرجوكَplace my hope in you فيin كلّevery حالةٍcircumstance
علىgiven أنّthat منْwhoever يرْجوكَhopes in you ليسَdoes not يَخيبُfail
Yet I place my hope in you in every circumstance,
But I hope in every situation
for whoever puts his hope in you is not disappointed.
That one who hopes in you will not be disappointed
فكلّso every مَرامٍaim أبْتَغيهI seek it مُبلَّغٌattained
وكلّand every بَعيدٍdistant thing أرتَجيهِI hope for it قَريبُnear
So every aim I seek is attained,
Every distant goal I aspire to is attainable
and everything far off that I hope for is near.
And every far-off desire is near
