Victory itself has set its steeds racing before you.

Conquest itself has cast its reins to you.

Is this not the maiden of conquests, through which

Time has come to bring glory's far reaches close to you?

Is this not, among creation, a steady rain of mercy,

With which God has greeted existence and showered it with bounty?

It is the lofty rock, where guidance has come to dwell,

And pervaded the hills and hollows of its inhabited land.

And its abode was cleansed of idolatry; in turn,

Monotheism there plots against whoever had plotted against it.

And your sword is God's sword; when it entered its precincts,

Through it He made the enemy host lawful prey and annihilated it.

And your army is God's army; it has made a charge,

Drawing its blades or brandishing its straight spears.

So every armored warrior brandished every straightened spear,

Sustaining his charges on the field of battle.

    فلمْ يوردِ العذْبَ الزلالَ وِرادَهُ

    And unbelief's freshly shed blood flowed over its broad plains;

So it did not bring its water-seekers to sweet, clear water.

And the Muslim hosts returned to its precincts,

Scattering the aggressor's host and his massed forces.

Abodes with Islam within them, as though they were,

Now that it has settled there, a body embracing its heart.

There God humbled the cross and its partisans,

And through al-Nasir, the lord, He exalted His servants.

And He unsheathed victory's sword amid terror, laying

Its baldric upon the valiant lord's shoulder.

So unbelief's champion was displaying fortitude,

Until the lord showed him his warfare and swordplay.

And the defender of God's religion, for God's sake, displays

His reliance on God in every affair.

And indeed the Romans' Infante struggles whenever

His Majesty Yusuf shows him his holy warfare.

And idolatry's champion had come, obeying

A desire that drove him toward humiliation and led him.

So he won it willingly and settled within its bounds,

And deposited his stores and equipment there.

And he journeyed to his native lands, victorious,

Hoping to return to it, not to the hereafter.

And now he was coming toward it, so he claimed,

He wishes, but God allows only what He wills.

He set out striving, already wasted by burning thirst,

Hoping there for his draught and his desire.

He led the army of error purposefully toward it,

So destiny barred him from its waters and drove him back,

Until Yusuf, lord of the caliphs, came.

So he strove, displayed his resolve, and showed it anew.

And he shouldered the burdens of the caliphate, displaying—

So he strove, displayed his resolve, and showed it anew.

At this, the flock of the faith's enemy was terror-stricken,

So that the fluttering of the banners mimicked his heart.

It is as though unbelief's champion has already failed in his striving,

And the encounter has checked his aggression and defiance.

I seem to see him already departing, with the sword behind him,

And leaving his lands to the manifest conquest.

And he took nothing but flight as protection,

And stored up nothing but humiliation as his provisions.

So, O defender of Islam and king who

Has shown us his peerlessness in perfection's many forms:

Joy to you in this beautiful deed! Before you, indeed,

Mighty victory has set its steed coursing through it.

And may you be congratulated on a thousand like it; the occasion demands,

Through your glory, that the many follow this single one.

And accept it, though improvisation has never ceased

To turn the eloquent speaker from what he intended.

And the qualities of our lord, the caliph Yusuf,

Would confound Quss when he met his Iyad.

May your reign, my lord, forever shine,

Raining bounty, so that supplicants seek its recurring showers.
