فَياso O عَذولَcensurer of صَباباتيmy passionate longings ألاis there no زَمَنٌtime
يكْفيwards off زمانَةَthe chronic ailment of قلْبيmy heart أوor يُداوِيهاcures it
So, O censurer of my passionate longings, is there no time
that will ward off my heart’s chronic ailment or cure it?
قدْmight يُجْتَلىbe beheld حُسْنُهاher beauty لوْلاwere it not for تقَنُّعُهاher veiling herself
ويُجْتَنَىand be plucked زهْرُهاher blossoms لوْلاwere it not for تجَنِّيهاher unjust reproaches
Her beauty might be beheld, were it not for her veiling;
And her blossoms plucked, were it not for her unjust reproaches.
أناI الذيthe one who حينَwhen تُقْصينيshe drives me away أقرِّبُهاI draw her near
وإنand if أساءَتْshe does wrong بإحْسانٍwith kindness أجازيهاI repay her
I am the one who, when she drives me away, draws her near;
And if she wrongs me, I repay her with kindness.
إنْif كانis يُمْنَعُbarred طرْفيmy gaze أنto يُشاهِدَهاbehold her
فلَيْسَyet is not يُمنَعُbarred قَلبيmy heart منfrom تَمنّيهاlonging for her
If my gaze is barred from beholding her,
Yet my heart is not barred from longing for her.
ألْقَىI face هواجِرَscorching noons لاnot تلْقَىshe faces ظَهيرتَهاtheir noonday heat
أرْعَىI watch نجومَthe stars of لَيالٍnights لاnot تُراعِيهاshe watches them
I face scorching noons whose heat she never faces;
I watch the stars of nights she never watches.
تَتيهُshe acts haughtily مائِلَةًturning aside عنّيfrom me وقائِلَةًand saying
أنتَyou الذيthe one who قدalready ألِفْتَyou have grown used to الهجْرَestrangement والتّيهاand disdain
She acts haughtily, turning away from me and saying:
“You are the one already accustomed to estrangement and disdain.”
فقُلْتُthen I said علَّperhaps خَيالاًa vision منكof you يَطْرُقُنيvisits me by night
قالَتْshe said أتَطْلُعُdoes ... rise? شمسٌa sun فيin دَياجِيهاtheir deep darkness
Then I said, “Perhaps a vision of you will visit me by night.”
She said, “Does a sun rise in their deep darkness?”
عنَّيْتِyou have tormented قَلبيmy heart بأشْجانٍwith sorrows أكابِدُهاI struggle to endure them
فهَلْso can ...? يَصيرُbecome طَليقاًfree مَنone who يُعانيهاsuffers them
You have tormented my heart with sorrows I struggle to endure;
So can one who suffers them ever become free?
وكيفَand how يصْحوsobers up الفَتىthe young man منfrom سُكْرِthe intoxication of خمْرَتِهاher wine
وقدwhen indeed سقَتْهُgave him drink غَوانيهَاher fair maidens أوانِيهاher cups
And how can a young man sober up from the intoxication of her wine,
When her fair maidens have given him drink from her cups?
