and the star of darkness did not linger on the horizon.

toward their watering place, were only sandgrouse circling.

and a wrist stretched forth from dawn to gather them.

Darkness, with dawn beneath its trailing hems, seemed

a black horse with white markings at the ends of its legs.

And when its stars fell, the night journey was illumined

by dawn's radiance, where the caravan was a concealed secret.

by a love encamped in the departing travelers' tents.

Can the anguish lodged within my breast be hidden,

when my eyelids' tears interpret my inner thoughts?

embroider the hills of its ruins and adorn them finely.

who returned only with the carefree soul enslaved by love!

I marvel that a speechless creature saddens two eloquent speakers.

by the haste of its night journey, not by deep-red wine.

a line upon the sand, dotted by hooves.

protected in its encampments' reaches, luxuriant.

Nor the gazelle with shining breastbones: if he bends

his neck toward his aim, he turns as a lion.

    ولا راقَ منْهُ اللحْظُ وهْوَ مُنوَّمُ

    His neck gives no disquiet, though long and raised;

nor does his glance delight, though languid.

Perhaps I shall attain that visit and join those before me,

and my intent count when I am counted among them.

How could the intent fail, when the most generous is he

who gives what petitioners desire and grants favor?

And how, when my love for the Prophet Muhammad

has a traced inscription upon the heart's stone?

O Messenger of God, there is a need within my soul,

and your standing is hoped in for something greater.

I hoped and deferred affairs, certain

that God's decree is an inevitable matter.

O inquirer about what my breast conceals,

and what is in my thoughts, which no mouth has uttered for me:

I shall obtain what I hoped for; praise of him

is known by that whose attainment raises ranks.

If you do not encompass the secret in knowledge, turn away from

reproaching me, for God is higher and knows better.

Leave me: God's decree—exalted be His majesty—

has, beyond the unseen, a concealed secret.

Do you deem this world slight, yet deem great what

you hope for from it, when your Lord is more generous?

Entrust me to praising the Chosen, sent Messenger, through whom

God pardons my sins and has mercy.

My thought immortalizes every marvel concerning him,

inscribed and drawn upon the page of time.

And looses its arrow from the bow of excellence,

in hope of being allotted a share in intercession.

Perhaps sins that have left in my heart

wounds will be healed by speech arranged in verse.

How many features of guidance are beheld,

and how many breaths of divine favor inhaled!

God's peace be upon you so long as mankind heads toward

your sanctuary, and so long as they bless you and offer peace.
