إذْ ليْسَ عن ورْدِ المنى مَذْهبُ
O their camel-driver, where are you taking them?
Where is she heading, when the path to love's roses leads nowhere?
For there is no departing from the watering place of wishes.
This is the season where the deer have their grazing and stars their watch tower.

والأنْجُمِ المَرتعُ والمرْقبُ
This is the dwelling, where the gazelles
If you seek help the living will aid you, or light if you need illumination - it will not be denied.
And the stars have their pasture and lookout.
My tears cannot quench my burning thirst for those nights I spent awake.

أو تَسْتَضئْ فالنّور لا يُحْجَبُ
If you seek bounty, the rain will lavish it on you.
Their shining stars mock whenever they rise or set in the darkness.
Or if you seek light, the light is not veiled.
If shaken, they are weak and pliant, or coil up stiff and erect as blades.

Longing does not make thirsty the laden camels that
The dark night saddles its steeds, followed at dawn by the grey one.
Traveled by night; my tears offer them a watering place.
The dawn has furled its banner, beneath which the pearls of dew are plundered.

They watched the radiance of their lightning whenever
The honest folk have faces that please, lit up beautifully at sunrise.
It came or went amid the darkness.
Passion flames in my heart when I think of them, however often their white hair appears.

أو سُلّ فهْوَ صارمٌ مُذْهَبُ
If brandished, it is a slender spear leveled for battle;
I hastened to them when they pitched camp, and my effort was not in vain.
Or, if drawn, it is a sharp, gilded sword.
I care not for the critics, what business have they? Every lover is exhausted by them.

And night's black steed presses on its nocturnal journey;
They know that for the impassioned, all torment is brought to bear.
A gray steed from its morning follows it.
Were they peerless eyes or arrows that pierced and shredded our hearts?

عِقْدُ الدّراري تحْتها يُنْهَبُ
Dawn has been raised as a banner for it,
Oh how often misfortune has scorned my hopes and denied my wishes!
Beneath which the necklace of bright stars is plundered.
How often it tossed my heart about in its embers until transformed and overturned!

And the neighbors of truth have faces
A calamitous fate whose clouds, whenever life is hoped for, flash with barren lightning.
At whose beauty the light of morning marvels.
So where can I seek refuge, O Guiding Imam, other than in your lofty heights?

The heart's longing flares at their remembrance,
The gardens of culture have withered since they were abandoned, no gentle breath issues from them,
However much its gray sidelock shows.
And bounty finds no rain for its irrigation, so they have no abundant crops.

The slanderer denounced me to them when
But for our Master there is comfort, which now flows copiously for him.
They had pitched camp, and they did not thwart his tale-bearing.
No surprise in whoever was hostile or harvests what he sows, for such is the way of fate.

كُلُّ مُحِبٍّ بِهِمُ مُتْعَبُ
What have I to do with reproachers? What concern is it of theirs?
How often has a stingy granter denied me what I constantly desired!
Every lover is tormented by them.
How often has a tyrannical adversary blocked my quest, barring the path before me!

They know that, for the people of love,
How often has passion heaped burdens beyond endurance or contentment!
Every torment tastes sweet.
How many nights have I spent awake, when stars barely seemed to set!

Are these eyes nocked for shooting, or arrows
Their full moons appearing between them like the face of al-Nasir's son, ringed by his entourage.
With which the gazelle herd strikes our hearts dead?
Yusuf the Victorious is the sea of dew, and for him Qays ibn Sa`d is a father.

So it is—and how many a cruel rebuff from Time
Have mercy on the world, their rule is bountiful like pouring rain.
Leaves the hopeful short of what he seeks!
Their foreheads shine radiant in the darkness like stars and planets.

How often it has turned my heart upon its embers,
Those who obey the supremacy of his rule, in the East and West,
Though it is truly cunning and resourceful!
Those who came to his aid in days of strife, his resolve and fearsome sword,

An age whose clouds are rainless whenever
The two honored in the jewels of his rule, my praise for my Master whom I serve,
Rain is hoped for, and whose lightning deceives.
The two victorious, for whom Marwan ascends and Sa`ad prospers,

Where, then, away from it, O imam of guidance,
A king whose origin is Mecca, and this Imam rooted in Yathrib,
Is there escape except to your lofty heights?
The supporters of Allah's faith were his forefathers, from them came the greatest Master.

Since the gardens of letters have grown barren,
A Master who gives generously when asked and pardons transgressions.
No fragrant breath has wafted from them.
His noble nature decrees forgiveness, not blame.

Nor has a shower refreshed generosity there,
Clemency, knowledge are his traits, as are wisdom and might that elicits awe.
So no ground around them is fertile.
Deeds no past king achieved, far beyond count or measure.

But our lord has a palm
If bygone rulers had seen a fraction of his feats, extolling his essence,
Whose steady rain now pours upon them.
They would have been titled, not for victory, guidance or wise rule, but for security and safety.

No wonder at its cruelty or its wrongdoing;
In war or peace, his fearsome sword, intimidating yet enticing.
For every age is astonishing in its ways.
When fear furrows the brows of his enemies, his every frontier becomes a yawning gulf.

He will be seen opening what was beyond reach, impregnable and difficult.
What I had always wished to avoid!
The whites rise on pulpits of their skulls, delivering sermons.

The browns find rest when unleashed to dye their blood.
And the road to my wishes was barred to me!
O King of the World whose justice has dispelled the gloom that veiled its horizon,

How often it has burdened the lover with more than
I have attained my hopes through what you grasped, and now crave nothing more,
Radwa or Ghurrab can bear!
No wish of mine today will be thwarted, or pursuit of mine made arduous.

How many a night I have spent awake,
My Master accept this eloquent eulogy, though it conveys my purpose.
In which the bright stars scarcely seemed to set!
Your acceptance is my aim, and he who attains it can trail his mantle above the clouds.

The face of Ibn Nasr, surrounded by the retinue.
May you remain the pillar of Islam, for as long as the sun's rays emerge at dawn!

His bounty and the pouring rain.

Is traced, and he who to its Sa'd is ascribed.
