وظَبْيةِand a gazelle إنْسٍhumankind ليسَis not يُرْجىhoped for وصالُهاunion with her
مدَىthroughout الدّهْرِall time إلاexcept بالتوهّمِthrough imagination والفكْرِand thought
And a gazelle in human form, with whom union cannot be hoped for
A gazelle's love cannot be hoped for
Throughout time, save through imagination and thought.
Through the ages except in fancy and thought
كلِفْتُI became enamored بهاwith her كالزُّهْرِlike bright stars والزَّهْرِand blossoms فيon الرُبىthe hills
لِماfor what راقَwas captivating منْof بِشْرٍsmiling cheer وماand what رقَّwas delicate منْof نَشْرِfragrance
I fell in love with her, like bright stars and blossoms on the hills,
I was captivated by her, like a flower by the rain
For her captivating smile and her delicate fragrance.
For the charm of her features and the bloom of her face
عجبْتُI marvelled لهاat her والوُدُّand affection منْهاfrom her سجيّةٌan innate disposition
وعنْand instead of خبَريan account of me يُغْنيكَspares you فيin حُبِّهاlove for her خُبْريfirsthand knowledge of me
I marvelled at her, though affection is her nature;
I wondered at her, though her love was my nature
And firsthand knowledge of my love for her spares you any account of me.
And you need not heed what I say of my passion for her
تقولُshe says بأنّيthat I قدalready سلَوْتُI have forgotten عنِabout الهَوىlove
ولاand no عُذْرَexcuse فيin ترْكِabandoning اتّباعِfollowing الهَوىlove العُذْريchaste (ʿUdhri)
She says that I have forgotten love,
She says I have slipped in the bonds of love
And there is no excuse for ceasing to follow chaste ʿUdhri love.
And there's no excuse in shunning the passion, no excuse
وتُخبِرُand she reports أنّيthat I ناظمٌcomposing in verse وصْفَa description of غيرِهاsomeone other than her
وماand not شعرَتْshe perceived إنْif قلتُI spoke فيabout غيرِهاsomeone other than her شِعْريmy poetry
And she says I describe someone other than her in verse,
She tells me I versify the features of another
Yet she does not know whether I have spoken my verse of another.
And she never knew, if I said it of another, my verse was for her
وتزْعمُand she claims أنّيthat I لاnot أباليI care بهجْرِهاabout her desertion
وأنّand that الهَوىlove منّيfrom me خِداعٌdeceit لهاupon her يجْريis practised
And she claims I am untroubled by her desertion,
She claims I do not care that she shuns me
And that my love is a deception practised upon her.
That the love from me was but a deceit flowing to her
فلِمْso why ذاthis يَصوبُstreams down الدّمْعُthe tears والطرفُand the gaze شاخِصٌfixed in a stare
وأطْويand I fold الحَشاthe heart لهْفاًin anguish علىaround لهَبthe flame of الجَمْرِthe embers
Why, then, do tears stream down while my gaze is fixed,
Why then do the tears flow and the eyelids quiver
And I fold my heart in anguish around the embers' flame?
Why do I fold the cheek in flames for the embers within
منعْتُI withheld إذاًin that case وفْريmy wealth وخُنْتُand I betrayed أذمَّتيmy pledges
وسالَمْتُand I made peace with أعْدائيmy enemies ولمْand not أكُI was ذاpossessing أمْرِauthority
Then I would have withheld my wealth and betrayed my pledges,
I refused my plenty and betrayed my troth
And made peace with my enemies, and possessed no authority.
Made peace with my foes and had no command
ألَسْتُam I not المُسمّىthe one named باسْمِby the name of صِدّيقِthe utterly truthful one ربِّهhis Lord
وناصِرَand defender of دينthe faith of اللهِGod فيin الحادِثِthe calamity النُّكْرِdire
Am I not the one bearing the name of his Lord's truthful servant,
Am I not named the friend of his God
And the defender of God's faith in dire calamity?
And defender of Allah's faith against dreadful events
ألسْتُam I not الذيthe one who تعْنُوbow المُلوكُkings لعِزِّهto his might
وتَرْهَبُهُand fear him فيin حالَيthe two states of النّهْيforbidding والأمْرِand commanding
Am I not the one to whose might kings bow,
Am I not he whom kings stand in awe
And whom they fear, whether he forbids or commands?
And dread whether I bid or forbid
ألسْتُam I not الذيthe one who تخشىfear الكُماةُarmored warriors نِزالهُcombat with him
وترْهَبُand dread منهُfrom him البطشَthe onslaught بالبيضِwith white swords والسُمْرِand tawny spears
Am I not the one whom armored warriors dread to face in battle,
Am I not he the champions fear to face
And fear his onslaught with white swords and tawny spears?
And the valiant dread my might against blacks or reds
ألستُam I not الذيthe one who ترْجوhope for العُفاةُsupplicants نَوالَهُhis bounty
وقدand indeed جادَهاit has drenched them منْهُfrom him بمُنْهَمِلِwith pouring القَطْرِrain
Am I not the one whose bounty supplicants hope for,
Am I not he the destitute hope to gain
And whose bounty has drenched them like pouring rain?
Who has poured them plenty from the pouring cloud
فلِمْso why لاnot أوَفّيI fulfill العهْدَthe covenant والفضْلُand virtue شيمَتيmy nature
وأنّand that وفائِيmy fidelity لاnot يُروَّعُis daunted بالغَدْرِby treachery
Then why should I not keep the covenant, when virtue is my nature,
Why do I not keep faith when good faith is my nature
And my fidelity is not daunted by treachery?
And my loyalty cannot be frightened by betrayal
وعِزّةُand the might of مُلْكيmy sovereignty طوعُهاsubject to it كُلُّevery مالِكruler
وأيْنَand where عُلاthe heights of الشهْبانِthe shooting stars منcompared with رِفْعَةِthe loftiness of البَدْرِthe full moon
And every ruler submits to the might of my sovereignty;
The glory of my kingdom, all kings obey it
And what are the shooting stars' heights beside the full moon's loftiness?
Where are the shooting stars next to the rising moon
فلاso no حُكْمَjudgment إلاexcept كُنتُI was فيهِin it مُحَكَّماًappointed arbiter
ولاand no أمْرَorder إلاexcept وهْوَand it يصدُرُissues عنْfrom أمْريmy command
So no judgment is made unless I am its appointed arbiter,
No judgment but I was the arbitrator
And no order issues except by my command.
No command went forth but from my command
