ألاAh! حيِّهاgreet them فيin حَيِّهاtheir quarter أوْجُهاًfaces غُرّاradiant
فإنّيَfor indeed I لاdo not أنْسىforget اغْتِراريmy being beguiled بهاby them غِرّاwhile inexperienced
Ah, greet those radiant faces in their quarter!
For I do not forget how they beguiled me in my innocence.
وقُلْand tell ليَto me هلْcan ...? توسىbe healed زمانَةُchronic affliction عاشِقٍa lover
بعودةِby the return أيّامِdays الزّمانِtime الذيwhich مَرّاpassed
And tell me: can a lover's affliction be healed
by the return of the days of time gone by?
تقضّىpassed away كمثلِlike الطّيفِa dream-vision إنif زارَvisited فيin الدُجىthe darkness
يُرَىis seen عندَماwhen لاحَappeared الصّباحُmorning قدِalready ازْوَرّاturned away
It passed away like a dream-vision that, if it visits in the dark,
is seen to have turned away when morning dawns.
وهلْand have ...? مازَجَتْmingled with أنفاسُbreaths أحْبابِناour loved ones الصّباthe east wind
وإلاand if not فلِمْthen why رقّتْbecame gentle ولمْand why عبَقَتْgrew fragrant نَشْراperfume
And have our loved ones' breaths mingled with the east wind?
And if not, why has it grown gentle, and why does it exude perfume?
أياO مَنْwho لصَبٍّfor a lovesick man قدalready غَداhas become دُرُّpearls دمْعِهِhis tears
علىupon خدِّهhis cheek نظْماًstrung together وفيand upon نحْرِهِhis throat نَثْراscattered
O, who will aid a lovesick man whose tear-pearls have become
strung upon his cheek and scattered upon his throat?
فمُذْfor since خالَهُمhe imagined them دُرّاًpearls وصارتْand became قِبابُهُمْtheir pavilions
لهُمْfor them صدَفاًshells أجْرىhe made flow مدامِعَهُhis tears بحْراa sea
For since he imagined them as pearls and their pavilions became
shells for them, he made his tears flow as a sea.
وممّاand among what أجدَّrekindled الوجْدَpassionate longing حُسْنُthe beauty عَقيلةٍa noble lady
تفوقُsurpasses جَمالاًin beauty كُلَّevery غانيةٍbeautiful woman عَذْراvirgin
And among what rekindled my longing was a noble lady's beauty,
who surpasses every lovely virgin in beauty.
فياso, O حُسْنَهاher beauty منas روضةٍa garden أدبيّةٍliterary
غَداbecame عَرْفُهاher fragrance شِحْراًShihr ومنظَرهاand her appearance سِحْراenchantment
How lovely she is—a garden of letters!
Her fragrance became Shihr, and her appearance enchantment.
لقدindeed راقَنيdelighted me إجْمالُهاher concision وجَمالُهاand her beauty
فأصْبَحْتُso I became مشْغوفاًenamored بغُرَّتهاof her brow الغَرّاradiant
Her concision and beauty have indeed delighted me,
so I became enamored of her radiant brow.
فأبْدىthen revealed مُحيّاهاher countenance ليَto me البِشْرَcheerfulness والرّضىand contentment
ووافَتْand she arrived علىaccording to حُكْمِthe decree السّعادةِgood fortune بالبُشْرىwith glad tidings
Then her countenance revealed cheerfulness and contentment to me,
and she came by good fortune's decree, bearing glad tidings.
وقدand indeed راقَlooked lovely لوْنُthe color الحِبْرِthe ink فوقَupon بياضِهاher whiteness
كَماjust as راقَlooked lovely لوْنُthe color الخالِthe beauty mark فيon وجْنةِthe cheek العَذْراthe virgin
And indeed, the ink's color was lovely upon her whiteness,
as a beauty mark's color is lovely on a virgin's cheek.
حَبانيfavored me بهاwith her ذوone possessed of الفضْلِexcellence والمجْدِand glory والتُقَىand piety
فطاوَلتُso I rivaled in height بالشُهْبانِwith the shooting stars منfrom أفْقِهاher horizon البَدْراthe full moon
A man of excellence, glory, and piety bestowed her upon me,
so, with shooting stars from her horizon, I rivaled the full moon in height.
لَئِنْeven if كانis فيناamong us شخْصُهُhis person يطأtreads الثّرىthe soil
ففوْقَyet above الثُريّاthe Pleiades مجْدُهُhis glory قدindeed علاhas risen قدْراin stature
Though his body treads the earth among us,
yet his glory has risen in stature above the Pleiades.
يَروعُterrifies أعاديهِhis enemies بغُصْنِwith the branch يراعِهِhis reed pen
فتحْسِبُهاso you think it فيin كفِّهِhis hand صعْدةًa straight spear سَمْراbrown
He terrifies his enemies with the branch of his reed pen,
so you take it in his hand for a tawny spear.
سقاهاhe gave it drink مُدامَwine الحِبْرthe ink حتّىuntil اسْتَمالَهاhe made it incline
فهلْso did ...? سجدتْit prostrated itself شُكْراًin gratitude كماjust as رجَحَتْit swayed سُكْراin drunkenness
He gave it the wine of ink to drink until he made it incline;
did it then prostrate itself in gratitude, as it swayed in drunkenness?
لكyours are الفِقَرُthe passages الغُرُّradiant التيwhich قدindeed حبَيْتَنيyou favored me

Yours are the radiant passages that you have favored me
with; so after them I no longer complain of poverty.
وقُدْتand you led قوافِيthe rhymes الشّعْرِpoetry طوْعاًwillingly وحُكتَهاand you wove them

And you led poetry's willing rhymes and wove them,
so you displayed them as blossoms and made them rise as radiant stars.

They came while minds yearned toward them, for they
obey you, whatever prohibitions and commands you impose.
ودونَكَهاand take her منْfrom صوْنِsafekeeping عقْليmy mind عقيلَةًa noble maiden

And take her from my mind's safekeeping: a noble maiden
of verse; so offer her generosity and good cheer.
