What humiliation have I kept overlooking, swallowing my anger?

And what sorrow have my tears spent the night expressing?

Are you in earnest? The tongues of tears never cease

to declare what you once could only mutter.

As though you had not ridden the sharp edges of calamities

whose points were sharper and more wounding than this one's.

Yes; yet the heart's wound is reopened by the sorrow that

now descends, however great the earlier anguish.

How many a calamity's strong flank I have confronted with patience,

and my patience was never found weak in the clash.

Even if it confronted Radwa with its slightest thrust—

steadfast beneath its hardships when it puts one to the test.

Whoever lacks noble patience is the one who is,

by your good fortune, destitute—not whoever lacks wealth.

Will they turn their sudden, cutting blows away from me—

these calamities that weaken and shatter lofty glory?

    تَظَلُّ لَها أَسبابُهُ تَتَجذَّمُ

    Every day they plant a crushing foot in glory's sanctuary;

its supporting cords keep being severed by them.

Whenever they burden me with a surging, formidable ordeal,

a dire, deaf, annihilating one follows in its wake.

Or does Time swear that its vicissitudes will never relent,

as they keep directing calamities toward me?

And you asked of caution squandered and a rash impulse

indulged; yet even a cleaving sword may fail to bite.

Do not make his heart feel the sting of reproach,

for you are more blameworthy than the one you frightened with blame.

You have never seen a man of prudence, resolve, and experience

granted mastery over the fate that takes its course upon him.

When has a clever man, by stratagem, ever repelled

the first assaults of what is decreed against him and made final?

Had I devised a stratagem against the fate that

cast me aside, I would not have been outdone by sounder judgment.

But when someone's affairs are controlled against his will,

their ruler carries out the decree and makes it binding.

I never feared that my ambition would dwindle,

leaving me lingering over foul, stagnant water.

As though the confidant who once stirred my thoughts

were fettered in captivity, or a drunken man dozing.

I never accepted baseness as my course,

with a place for me to advance among the spearpoints.

My resolve has never known the shade of indolence—

how could it, when both its edges are keener than a sword?

Have you not seen that a free man finds death sweet

when it keeps him from abasement, though it is bitter colocynth?

    إِذا كانَ فيهِ العِزُّ لا يَتَلَعثَمُ

    And separation flings bodies into mortal peril;

if honor lies in it, he does not hesitate.

I shall make myself a target for deadly perils,

and fling myself toward death—for death is more honorable.

Graze freely in your own land, or journey to the grave,

for a stranger among a people is meat on the butcher's block.

    وَمَن ذا عَلى التَفريطِ لا يَتَنَدَّمُ

    I regretted it, for negligence yields regret;

and who does not regret negligence?

He placates, or closes his eyes to grit,

and is seared by bitterness, yet utters no murmur.

Yet I—judgment belongs to God—am confident

in a resolve that breaks through calamity, though it is impenetrable,

and in a heart that, if a sword struck its breast,

would leave the sword's edge notched.

Alongside a tongue from whose determined sallies scatter

untamed verses that gnaw at solid, towering mountains,

unerring, they lay hearts low, as though

a dusky, mottled snake were spitting venom upon them.

And what defense have enemies against a man clad

in garments of death whose seepage is musk and blood,

unyielding and valiant—between the curves of his saddle,

a blazing meteor; within his two robes, a strong-gripping lion?

When Time aims its claw's sharp edge at him,

he bends it back, and Time's claw comes away from him clipped.

And if calamity bites him, it writhes with its fang,

and calamity withdraws from him, its fang worn blunt.

You have never seen my like, angered yet looking on,

nor my like, silent yet speaking.

Through poetry a man reveals the face of his mind,

and lays bare everything within it that he once concealed.

Equal are one whose intellect has not mounted his verse

to master its two flanks, and another unable to compose verse.

Roamers of the lands' far reaches, towering high,

they wear the nights away, yet remain unbroken.

Have you not seen what was conveyed to us and spread abroad

over the long ages, by ʿAd and Jurhum?

They rode the proverbs unbroken, stubborn in their reins,

and their fierce, headlong ones grew tame for them.

    وَذو العَقلِ مَذكورٌ وَذو الصَمتِ أَسلَمُ

    They said: passion is awake, while reason sleeps;

the man of reason is remembered, and the man of silence is safer.

And one of their sayings that spread like a brand through time is:

the fool brings harm upon himself and commits wrongdoing.

And like fire through dry brushwood runs their saying:

Indeed, a stick's origin is revealed where it is gnawed.

For they have spread what none can spread the like of—

eloquent or inarticulate—across the face of time.
