زفَراتٌdeep sighs لِلقَلبِfor the heart فيهاin them إِذاwhen ماemphasis after 'when'
زفَراتٌ لِلقَلبِ فيها إِذا ما
ضَرَّمَتهاkindled them الهُومُthe worries (likely intended: الهموم) فيهِwithin it أَزيزُa crackling
ضَرَّمَتها الهُومُ فيهِ أَزيزُ
The heart has sighs in which, whenever
Worries kindle them, a crackling sounds within it.
زَعَمواthey claimed أَنَّthat مَنwhoever يُحِبُّloves ذَليلٌhumbled
زَعَموا أَنَّ مَن يُحِبُّ ذَليلٌ
فَكَذاso likewise كُلُّevery مَنperson who يُحِبُّloves عَزيزُhonored
فَكَذا كُلُّ مَن يُحِبُّ عَزيزُ
They claimed that whoever loves is humbled;
So likewise, everyone who loves is honored.
زارَhe visited تَحتَbeneath الكرىsleep فَسَهَّلَso he made easy أَمراًa matter
زارَ تَحتَ الكرى فَسَهَّلَ أَمراً
كانَwas إِنif رُمتI sought وَهوَwhile it صَعبٌdifficult حَريزُwell-guarded; inaccessible
كانَ إِن رُمت وَهوَ صَعبٌ حَريزُ
He visited in sleep and made easy a matter
That, if I sought it, was difficult and inaccessible.
زِلتُI kept on فيin أَمرِهِhis affair أَكَفكِفُI wipe away دَمعاًtears
زِلتُ في أَمرِهِ أَكَفكِفُ دَمعاً
ساقَهُdrove it لِلجُفونِto the eyelids شَوقٌlonging حَميزُsearing
ساقَهُ لِلجُفونِ شَوقٌ حَميزُ
I kept wiping away tears on his account,
Which a searing longing drove to my eyelids.
