خامَرَت قَلبَهُ هُمومٌ تَلَظَّت

خامَرَت قَلبَهُ هُمومٌ تَلَظَّت

نارُها في الحشا فَلَيسَت تَبوخُ

نارُها في الحشا فَلَيسَت تَبوخُ

Sorrows pervaded his heart and blazed;

Their fire within his breast does not die down.

خَفِيَت في الفُؤادِ ثُمَّ أَذاعَت

خَفِيَت في الفُؤادِ ثُمَّ أَذاعَت

لِدُموعٍ تَجيشُ ثُمَّ تَسوخُ

لِدُموعٍ تَجيشُ ثُمَّ تَسوخُ

They lay hidden in his heart, then revealed themselves

To tears that well up, then sink back.

خافَ نَأيَ الحَبيبِ فَاِستَخرَخَ الدَم

خافَ نَأيَ الحَبيبِ فَاِستَخرَخَ الدَم

عَ وَماءُ الجُفونِ نعمَ الصَريخُ

عَ وَماءُ الجُفونِ نعمَ الصَريخُ

He feared separation from the beloved and sought help from tears;

And the water of the eyelids is a fine rescuer.

خُنتَ مَن لَو دَعَوتَهُ وَهوَ مَيتٌ

خُنتَ مَن لَو دَعَوتَهُ وَهوَ مَيتٌ

ظَلَّ يُصغي مُسارِعاً وَيُصيخُ

ظَلَّ يُصغي مُسارِعاً وَيُصيخُ

You betrayed one who, if you called him even in death,

Would still listen, hastening and straining to hear.
