بِنَفسيwith my life as ransom ثَرىًearth ضاجَعتَyou lay beside فيin بَيتِهِits dwelling البِلىdecay
لَقَدindeed ضَمَّit enclosed مِنكَfrom you الغَيثَthe rain وَاللَيثَand the lion وَالبَدراand the full moon
My soul be ransom for dust beside which decay has lain, within his grave.
My life be a ransom for the earth in whose dwelling you lay beside decay.
Indeed, what it has enfolded of you is the raincloud, the lion, and the full moon.
It has indeed enclosed, in you, the rain, the lion, and the full moon.
فَلَوso if أَنَّthat حَيّاًa living person كانَwere قَبراًa grave لِمَيِّتٍfor a dead person
لَصَيَّرتُI would have made أَحشائيmy entrails لِأَعظُمِهِfor his bones قَبراa grave
If only a living man could be a grave for one who has died,
So if a living person could be a grave for one who is dead,
I would make my innermost parts a grave for his bones.
I would have made my entrails a grave for his bones.
وَلَوand if أَنَّthat عُمريmy lifetime كانَwere طَوعَsubject to إِرادَتيmy will
وَساعَدَنيand aided me المَقدورُfate قاسَمتُكَI would have shared with you العُمراthe lifetime
And if my lifetime were obedient to my will,
And if my lifetime were subject to my will,
and fate aided me, I would share my span of life with you.
and fate aided me, I would have shared my lifetime with you.
وَماand not خِلتُI thought قَبراًa grave وَهوَwhile it is أَربَعُfour أَذرُعٍcubits
يَضُمُّholds ثِقالَheavy المُزنِthe rain clouds وَالطَودand the mountain وَالبَحراand the sea
Never did I imagine that a grave, though but four cubits,
And I had not thought a grave, a mere four cubits,
could hold the heavy rainclouds, the towering mountain, and the sea.
could hold rain-laden clouds, the mountain, and the sea.
