    بَل رَزايا لَهُنَّ عِبءٌ ثَقيلُ

    Manifest anguish and a grave calamity;

rather, disasters bearing a heavy burden.

    Rather, sudden torment—rather, calamities

    mighty, whose onset is mighty.

Indeed, on the plain of Tanuf is an abode

from which noble deeds have no turning away.

    أَحرَزَت خَصلَها وَفاتَ الخَليلُ

    Death roamed there, shaking the lot-arrows;

they won their prize, and the dear friend was lost.

    Death's hands left glory

no one through whom to rise or tower.

O sons of Malik son of Fahm—a slain man

whom no slain man among mankind can rival!

What might have they put before a spear

of yours that was not repulsed, abased?

What gaze rose toward you with guile

that you did not turn back, dulled by you?

What blade-edge did you confront with an edge

of yours that did not leave it chipped?

You were such that the many counted as few beside you,

and the great and formidable as small.

You were men of force; whenever it advanced,

death turned its face wherever it turned.

Are your numbers so few that you say,

'In battle we are but a scant muster'?

Or are you too weak for your vengeance, savoring

the draught of shame? The weak man is the abased one.

Are you women told of their husbands' deaths?

Husbands are the shelter of chaste women.

Or slaves to Rashid and Musa?

Which of these sorts are you? Tell us.

No man is mourned to her who was pillowed

on her wrists by a languid, long-necked beauty.

No, nor one who hoped well of the reversals

of time—that it would relent and turn in his favor.

    كَيفَ يَمشي المُقَيَّدُ المَعقولُ

    O sons of Malik, you have fettered my tongue;

how can a shackled, tethered man walk?

If you take a path toward deeds,

a path toward speech becomes clear to me.

Or if you refuse, I am hobbled from running—

and can a hobbled one reach the goal?

Where is Hanah to avenge it—the branches

of glory? Or where is its hoped-for refuge?

Where is Ma'n? When combat grows fierce, they

are lions before whom elephants scatter.

And the sons of Jahdam, the mountain of glory

    whose towering crest is impregnable.

Where is the cry of the sons of Sulaymah? Mountains

of nobility are their young men and mature men.

and those to whom we turn in battle.

And al-'Uqah, by whom despair is driven back,

even when it is grim and terrifying.

And Humam, its defenders, when none turns back

    but the lean, swift steed.

And our Farahid, from whose horses on the meadow

    blood streams.

And the age's defenders, from the house of Dahman,

when nose-rings and anklets are exposed.

And my mainstay from the house of Sid, whenever

war girds itself, and deaths alight.

And Sulayma, the fearless, when despair takes

the man of great numbers and the mighty, dauntless warrior.

And Sharik's young men, when nothing

avails but the unsheathed Indian-steel sword.

And the sons of Qasmal, who secure blood-vengeance,

if you fear that vengeance may escape you.

And my cousins from Judayd especially,

and Nafil, my mainstay in every affair.

And the sons of Hadir, my hand and my tongue,

    and my polished Indian-steel sword.

O sons of Malik son of Fahm—a slain man

amid calamities whose might ravages the heart!

    لَم يُقَل مَن ثَوى هُناكَ قَتيلُ

    Indeed, at the two meadows lie blood-drained heads;

those who lie there have not been called slain.

Shall blood be wasted, my people, through fear?

No equal requital, and no blood left unavenged!

On Oman's two mountains and along the shore you have

    abundant numbers and majestic might.

    فِ بِما نالَكُم مِنَ الذُلِّ نيلوا

    For the sons of al-Samah, loftiness stands above abasement;

were they struck by the humiliation that struck you,

their hearts would have recoiled, and

their inhabited dwelling would have rejected its people.

Will you accept being subjected to what they were subjected to?

Against the imposition of its like, you will rise in assault.

    لَ فَلا حينَ أَن تُجَرَّ الذُيولُ

    O son of Hamham, tuck up your hem for glory;

this is no time for trailing hems.

Bedding is not the business of those with blood to avenge,

    nor singing, lute, and wine;

nor an early morning draught and an evening cup,

nor roast meat, fine flour, and boiled meat.

His only garment, when darkness thickens,

is the hanging robe of the dark night.

His two beds: a cushion atop a croup,

and his upright throne, dark under its woolen cloak.

His two boon companions: a keen sword with a weathered edge,

and a sturdy, tractable steed with sound joints.

His two table companions: a sturdy mother of pups,

    and the tall, slender quarry.

That is the avenger—not one made timid

by morning sleep, soft and trailing his robes.

    تُدرِكِ الوِترَ مُنجداً وَهوَ نولُ

    O Sulayman, unsheathe your resolve and press forward;

you will attain your blood-claim with aid—and it is your due.

    أَنتُمُ العُدَّةُ الحُماةُ النُصولُ

    O Farahid, you are the star of noble endeavors;

you are the reserve, the defenders, the blades.

O Sulaym son of Malik, of that lineage—

the slain chief, our mainstay, has shattered us.

His limbs were hacked apart. I have sworn an oath

that allows its swearer no release.

If death had turned a blind eye to him,

one troop would have been guided by another, through him.

Blood is not lost as long as it is claimed

by their bond of kinship and noble patience.

What a day awaits Rashid and Musa!

That day, if you knew, is heavy indeed.

A day when connection through kinship is no use,

a day on which no excuse is accepted.

So may God curse whoever among us holds back the assault,

where one weakling takes another weakling as his companion.
