إِذا رَأَيتَ اِمرِءاً في حالِ عُسرَتِهِ

إِذا رَأَيتَ اِمرِءاً في حالِ عُسرَتِهِ

مُصافِياً لَكَ ما في وِدِّهِ دَخلُ

مُصافِياً لَكَ ما في وِدِّهِ دَخلُ

If you see a man in his time of hardship,

When you see a man in his time of need

Sincerely friendly toward you, with no deceit in his affection,

Expressing to you all the friendship in his heart

فَلا تُرَجِّ لَهُ إِذ يَستَفيدُ غِنىً

فَلا تُرَجِّ لَهُ إِذ يَستَفيدُ غِنىً

فَإِنَّهُ بِاِنتِقالِ الحالِ يَنتَقِلُ

فَإِنَّهُ بِاِنتِقالِ الحالِ يَنتَقِلُ

Then do not count on him when he gains wealth,

Do not spurn him, now that he seeks advantage

For he changes as his circumstances change.

For with the changing times his loyalty may shift
