أَقولُI say لِوَرقاوَينِto two gray doves فيin فَرعِa branch نَخلَةٍa palm tree
وَقَدand already طَفَّلَdrew on الإِمساءُthe evening أوor جَنَّحَinclined toward dusk العَصرُthe afternoon
I say to two gray doves on a palm-tree branch,
as evening draws on, or afternoon inclines toward dusk,
وَقَدand already بَسَطَتshe spread هاتاthis one لِتِلكَfor that one جَناحَهاher wing
وَمالَand leaned عَلىagainst هاتيكَthat one مِنof هَذِهِthis one النَحرُthe breast
with this one spreading her wing for that one,
and this one's breast leaning against that one:
لِيَهنَكُماmay it gladden you both أَنthat لَمnot تُراعاyou two were frightened بِفُرقَةٍby parting
وَماand not دَبَّcrept فيin تَشتيتِscattering شَملِكُماyour union (you two) الدَهرُTime
May it gladden you both that you have not been frightened by parting,
and Time has not crept in to sunder your union.
فَلَمfor ... not أَرَI have seen مِثليone like me قَطَّعَtore apart الشَوقُlonging قَلبَهُhis heart
عَلىdespite أَنّهthat it يَحكيmirrors قَساوَتَهُits hardness الصَخرُrock
For I have seen none like me, whose heart longing has torn apart,
though rock itself mirrors its hardness.
