لَكِto you العَهدُthe pledge عَهدُthe pledge of اللَهِGod أَلّاthat ... not يزالcease ليfor me
بِذِكراكِwith remembering you أَوuntil أَلقىI meet المَنِيَّةَdeath شاغِلُa preoccupation
I pledge to you, by God's covenant, that I shall always have
To you I pledge, a pledge of God that shall not cease
the remembrance of you to occupy me, until I meet death.
As long as I live, or meet my final breath
لِقَلبِيَfor my heart مِنfrom ذِكراكِremembering you فيin كُلِّevery خَطرَةٍpassing thought
تَلَهُّبُa blazing شَوقٍlonging إِنif عَداit assails لِيَto me قاتِلُdeadly
With every passing thought of you, my heart feels
My heart is filled with thoughts of you at every peril
a blaze of longing that, should it assail me, would kill me.
If absent from me, longing burns like glowing embers
لَبِستُI donned نُحولاًgauntness لَوif تَلَبَّسit took hold بِالصَفاof hard, smooth rock
لِأَصبَحَwould surely become مِنهُfrom it صَلدُهُits solid mass وَهوَand it is ناحِلُemaciated
I have donned such gauntness that, were it to take hold of rock,
If clothed with leanness, it would don Safa's stones
its solid mass would be left emaciated by it.
And from it hardness flows, no longer plump or full
لَعَلَّكِperhaps you إِنif أَمسَيتُI come to be رَهنَcaptive to حَفيرَةٍa little grave
تَقولينَyou will say جادَتهُmay they water him abundantly الغُيوثُthe rains الهَواطِلُpouring down
Perhaps, if I become a captive of a little grave,
Perhaps if interred inside a grave one eve
you will say, 'May the pouring rains water him abundantly.'
You'd say the heavy rains had freed me from its pit
