ضَمانٌa pledge أَنthat يُكَنَّفَhe be sheltered مُذsince تَوَلّىhe turned away
وَقَلبيand my heart مِنfrom تَذَكُّرِهِremembering him مَريضُsick

ضَنيتُI have wasted away وَكَيفَand how لاnot يَضنىwaste away مُحِبٌّa lover
يُشَرِّدُdrives away نَومَهُhis sleep دَمعٌtears يَفيضُoverflow
I have wasted away—and how could a lover not waste away,

ضَميريmy inner self مَرتَعُa pasture الأَحزانِof sorrows دَهريthroughout my life
وَطَرفيand my gaze عَنfrom سِوىother than سَكَنيmy beloved غَضيضُlowered
My soul is a pasture for sorrows throughout my life,
My conscience is the pasture of sorrows
and my gaze is averted from all but my beloved.
And my eye turns from any abode resentfully
ضِرامُthe blaze الشَوقِof longing فيin أَثناءِthe folds قَلبيof my heart
وَبَينَand between جَوانِحيmy ribs جَمرٌembers قَضيضُshattered
The blaze of longing is in the folds of my heart,

and between my ribs are shattered embers.
And between my ribs a blazing coal
