حَماهُkept him from الكَرىsleep طَيفٌa phantom يَهُمُّis intent بِجَفنِهِon his eyelid
حَماهُ الكَرى طَيفٌ يَهُمُّ بِجَفنِهِ
وَيَبعَثُand stirs ماءَwater of العَينِthe eye فَهوَso it is سَفوحُpouring forth
وَيَبعَثُ ماءَ العَينِ فَهوَ سَفوحُ
A phantom, about to visit his eyelid, has barred him from slumber,
A phantom intent on his eyelid has kept him from sleep,
and sends forth the eye’s water, which streams abundantly.
And stirs the eye's tears, so they pour forth.
حَرامٌforbidden عَلىto عَينٍan eye يُسامِرهاkeeps it company at night البُكاweeping
حَرامٌ عَلى عَينٍ يُسامِرها البُكا
وَجَفنٍand an eyelid رَماهُstruck it الوَجدُpassionate longing فَهوَso it is قَريحُwounded
وَجَفنٍ رَماهُ الوَجدُ فَهوَ قَريحُ
Slumber is forbidden to an eye that weeping keeps company through the night,
Sleep is forbidden to an eye that weeping keeps company at night,
and to an eyelid that passionate longing has struck and left wounded.
And to an eyelid struck by longing, leaving it wounded.
حَرامٌinaccessible عَلىto ماءِwater of السُلُوِّsolace through forgetting وَلِلهَوىand passion has
حَرامٌ عَلى ماءِ السُلُوِّ وَلِلهَوى
خَواطِرُthoughts تَغدوgo in the morning نَحوَهُtoward it وَتَروحُand go in the evening
خَواطِرُ تَغدو نَحوَهُ وَتَروحُ
The water of consolation is forbidden him, while longing has
It is closed to the waters of solace, and passion has
thoughts that journey toward him and return.
Thoughts that go toward it morning and evening.
حَوىencompassed غايَةَthe utmost البَلوىaffliction فُؤادٌa heart مُعَذَّبٌtormented
حَوى غايَةَ البَلوى فُؤادٌ مُعَذَّبٌ
طَوىwithheld عَنهُfrom it صَدّrejection حُبّهُhis love وَنزوحُand departure
طَوى عَنهُ صَدّ حُبّهُ وَنزوحُ
A tormented heart encompasses affliction’s furthest extreme;
A tormented heart has borne the utmost affliction,
distance has concealed from him the rebuff of his love.
His love's rejection and departure have withheld solace from it.
