قَلبٌa heart تَقَطَّعwas torn apart فَاِستَحالَand so turned into نَجيعاblood
فَجَرىthen flowed فَصارَand became مَعَwith الدُموعِthe tears دُموعاtears
A heart was torn apart and turned to blood,
A heart torn asunder and turned to pieces
Then flowed and became tears along with the tears.
It flowed and with tears became teardrops
رُدَّتwere driven back إِلىto أَحشائِهِhis innards زَفَراتُهُhis sighs
فَفَضَضنَand they shattered مِنهُof him جَوانِحاًchest bones وَضُلوعاand ribs
His sighs were driven back into his innards,
Its sighs returned to its depths
And shattered the bones of his chest and his ribs.
So ribs and limbs burst out from within
عَجَباhow wondrous لِنارٍat a fire ضُرِّمَتwas kindled فيin صَدرِهِhis breast
فَاِستَنبَطَتand drew forth مِنfrom جَفنِهِhis eyelid ينبوعاa spring
How wondrous—a fire was kindled in his breast,
Wondrous is the fire kindled in his chest
And drew forth a spring from his eyelid!
That drew fountains from his eyelids
لَهَبٌa flame يَكونُbecomes إِذاwhen تَلَبَّسَtakes hold بِالحَشاof the innards
قَيظاًsummer heat وَيَظهَرُand appears فيin الجُفونِthe eyelids رَبيعاspringtime
A flame that, when it takes hold of the innards, becomes
A flame that dons rage when clad in sorrow
Summer heat, yet appears as springtime in the eyelids.
And reveals spring in the eyes, scorching heat
