قل لي تناسيت أم أنسيت الفتنا

أيام رأيك فينا غير ذا الرائي

Tell me: have you feigned forgetting, or been made to forget our intimacy—

those days when your view of us was different from this present view?

كانت لقلبي أهواء مفرقة

فاستجمعت مذ رأتك العين أهوائي

My heart once had scattered desires;

then my desires united from the moment my eye saw you.

فصار يحسدني من كنت أحسده

وصرت مولى الورى مذ صرت مولائي

Then the one I used to envy began to envy me,

and I became master of all people when you became my master.

حتى إذا استيأس الحساد من دركي

وقل أعداي مذ قللت أكفائي

Until, when the envious despaired of catching up with me,

and my enemies grew few, since you had left me few equals,

حميت طعم الكرى عيني فاهتجرا

فصار طيب الكرى من بعض أعدائي

you denied my eye the taste of slumber, and the two parted;

so the sweetness of slumber became one of my enemies.

من خان هان وقلبي رائد أبداً

ميلاً إليك على هجري وأقصائي

Whoever betrays is abased; yet my heart forever seeks

to turn toward you, despite my being shunned and cast away.

لا بد لي منك فاصنع ما بدا لك بي

فقد قدرت على قتلي وإحيائي

I cannot do without you, so do with me as you please;

for you have the power to kill me and bring me to life.
